SINGLE REVIEW: Postman - Coventry Street
BBC 6 Music approved, Birmingham based post-punk 3-piece Postman return with their second single 'Coventry Street'.
The track crosses into many genres from the band's post-punk base. Capturing lo-fi sounds and gorgeous, deep, understated vocals that have a feeling of the 80's new romantic theatrics. 'Coventry Street' builds at times into a more thundering noise with a bold somewhat proggy stance and engrossing vox. There's sections of fuzzy, chaotic shoegaze infused guitars and a grunge edge reminiscent of Alice In Chains. It features a segment of sparkling early 90's indie before ending on chaotic post-punk raucousness with a glistening riff and high impact finale.
'Coventry Street' is an epic journey travelling through an array of sounds. It leans heavily on bygone days with its 90's inspired vibe. It's melancholic and downbeat while also being captivating and addictive.
The lyrics detail a real story of bass player and singer Adian McGuire finding his best friend passed out on 'Coventry Street' during the "Spiking Epidemic" of early 2022. The lyrics share the turmoil and confusion of finding yourself in such a situation pleading with them to "please wake up".
There's a great deal of maturity and professionalism in the band's writing and song construction. They show the skills of artists many years their senior. Their sound is diverse and versatile. They're an exciting talent who I'm sure have a bright future ahead of them.
