When Poetry and Drum and Bass enlace and women run the rave: Manchester MC Vispera delivers her debut 4-Track EP to Dropjaw Audio this September

When Poetry and Drum and Bass enlace and women run the rave: Manchester MC delivers her debut 4-Track EP to Dropjaw Audio this September. Featuring her distinct, visceral delivery in a retold story of creation, the ‘EDEN’ EP marks Vispera’s bold launch into a Drum and Bass missing gap.

Vispera, aka Eve Piper, has been performing words since her mid teens. Hailing from Manchester, she developed her voice through spoken word, slam poetry and creative writing. Recent years have seen her emerge into the Drum and Bass scene to narrate the rave space with a raw, poetic MCing style. On Thursday 12th September 2024, Vispera releases her debut self-led project, a 4-track EP entitled ‘EDEN’ on Manchester’s own Soundsystem-led label, Dropjaw Audio.

Reflective of her literary background and aim to empower women, the ‘EDEN’ EP is a modern retelling of The Fall of Man, the Biblical story of original sin. Across 4 tracks with different producers, Vispera delivers the story from the perspective of Eve. Her experience of coercion, disobedience and exile is a flipped metaphor for a modern women’s liberation of patriarchal control. The mood of the ‘EDEN’ EP reflects danger and aggression, seeking and being led astray, rebelling, questioning and affirming one’s place.

TRACKLIST

1. COTR (Creatures of the Rave) by Vispera, Portrait

A gritty, hedonistic roller with atmospheric breakdowns and echoes of energetic release. Manchester collaborators strike again as Portrait's production (Trust Audio, Off-Licence Records) and Vispera's words situate our story deep within the rave sphere, embarking on a raw journey with a sense of searching for more.

2. Man's Fall by Vispera, Komatose

A heavy hitting, dark, intense number plays backdrop to Vispera's impassioned refusal to conform to the rules. A techy display of lyrical confidence against continual climbs and crashes from Birmingham's highly skilled producer, Komatose (Drippyboii, Off-Licence Records, Big & Heavy Recordings) guide the listener through the second chapter of the journey.

3. Garden Path by Vispera, Mark Omen

The EP takes a step into the ethereal realm in Garden Path - produced by Bristol music veteran and academic, Mark Omen. This mysterious, surreal and intimate track explores patriarchal control over women, leading Eve 'down the Garden Path' to a false sense of security, with empty promise and sinister intentions.

4. Apple Bite by Vispera, Gifta, Charis

The rich and righteous climax of the EDEN EP - a fierce, formidable three-point collaboration brings the drama to a head. Vispera enlists the production heat of her sisters at Phase Records DNB (London) - the head-honcho Gifta and Shogun Mentee Charis - who bring a boiling, dark roller to drive the MC’s verse. Channelling rage, relish, breaking free and taking destiny into your own hands.
