SINGLE REVIEW: Quiet Houses - Kiss and Run

'Kiss and Run' by Quiet Houses isn't a track we've been asked to review, instead one I heard through another band's Spotify radio. Often I'll listen to an album or playlist and when it's done let the radio play in the background not really taking too much notice but every so often a song comes on that piques my interest and forces me to stop what I'm doing and give it every bit of my attention, that's exactly what 'Kiss and Run' did. In fact I had to play it 3 times back to back because once wasn't enough.

Starting out dreamy and folk-ish with alluring, hypnotic vocals that feature captivating layering and beautiful harmonies the song gradually builds into a dancey, indie infused groove with hazy, whimsical vocals and soft synths that provide a gateway into daydream-like state.

The lyrics of 'Kiss and Run' are what really captured my imagination. The feeling of you're not a certain way you must need saving. The fact that within romantic situations no-one has patience. Wanting everything immediately rather than going along for the ride and letting things grow resulting in a 'Kiss and Run' caused by the excessive pressure put on someone who's not ready for the intensity of a relationship. The idea that waiting could lead to something amazing, a genuine connection that’s lost in unnecessary urgency. It's a reminder that things don't need to be pressured and happen instantaneously, the best things come if you wait.

'Kiss and Run' is an astonishing track, the songwriting faultless and the delivery flawless. Quiet Houses, a duo from Edinburgh have created the perfect formula of catchy and melodic with a charming groove but also thoughtful, relatable and vulnerable. My single of the week, month, maybe even year so far!
