SINGLE REVIEW: Oliver Anderson - Youth Is Wasted
Hailing from Bromley, South London, Hometown to David Bowie and the birthplace of punk, Oliver Anderson has really placed all of his cards in building his own sound ‘Soulful Grit Pop’ surely fits the label, but to put simply, Anderson sits comfortably within indie pop-rock.
For fans of Paolo Nutini, Kaleo, Cage The Elephant.
Youth Is Wasted is a vibrantly brilliant song that bounces its way into your heart with melodies and playful choruses that will infect your mind. I love that it has a delicate intro and within a second bursts into a full and lively band sound, So wonderfully repetitive and singable that it’s impossible to stop singing along to.
Musically, so uplifting that you forget the lyrics are quite thought provoking. Don’t do what I do and dig deep into the lyrics or you might relate a little too well and upset yourself! However this effect might drive you to chase your dreams right on the spot instead of ignoring them a little bit longer!
What the song is about lies within the title, very self explanatory! It is about young people worrying too much about their futures, taking things too seriously and not living in the moment, taking the time to have fun.
I love the formula of writing in this song both metaphorical and literal way of lyric writing, a nice balance to follow and an easy listen to, the ultimate message is also that tomorrow isn’t promised, things will go wrong and there isn’t a plan in the world to prevent the inevitable. To live in the moment is precious and everyone can get on board with this message.
Youth Is Wasted is a song for everyone and anyone to listen and have fun with.
The music video is iconic to the fun loving atmosphere, with high energy and high stakes footage a perfect concept to go hand-in-hand with the track and Bailey Campbell did a wonderful delivery of producing and directing!
10/10 I can’t wait to hear more.
