SINGLE REVIEW: Lovekiss - Distress

Jacksonville, Florida's Lovekiss share a haunting soundscape of uncertainty and cathartic thought on their genre-defining new single 'Distress'.

I'm a big fan of 'Distress'; it's not an easy listen but one I guarantee you will connect with in a deeply emotional way. It's the kind of song that leaves you questioning your own life and your own dissatisfaction. It's like the noise in the back of your head making you doubt everything about yourself.

I love the track's genre-bending sound. Lovekiss are unafraid to push boundaries, challenge the known, and blur lines to create an intriguing, profoundly impacting sound unlike any other I've heard.

An atmospheric tapestry of harrowing, intensifying thoughts.

The darkened, somewhat proggy intro leads into a more metallic, metalcore-inspired verse before borrowing from grungy, shoegaze-infused distortion for the chorus. It's hazy with blackened riffs, pulsating drums, and a gritty bass line backing raw, emotion-fueled vocals.

The lyrics look at turmoil, a restless mind longing for closure. An out-of-body experience, looking at yourself but not truly knowing who you are. The betrayal of people "I've trusted many, but they always stab me in the back". A life full of depression and despair but the rejection of chemical release, the refusal to continually be pumped full of pills to feel better. The changing tempo of the track perfectly mirrors the restless nature of 'Distress'.

It's a magnificent ambiance of sinister melodies and shapeshifting vocals. Majestic, bold, uneasy, and cathartic. It's some of the most diverse, innovative music I've heard in a long time.

I'm into all kinds of music the more obscure the better (my music taste is definitely better than yours 🤪😜) with my fave band being The Wonder Years.

I'm an Ipswich Town fan and have an unhealthy obsession with hedgehogs!
