SINGLE REVIEW: Jiwon - autograph

Jiwon's single, 'autograph', is an experimental foray blending DIY indie pop with elements of dream pop and hyperpop, recorded entirely at home on an old laptop. While the track attempts to fuse a wide array of styles, including hip-hop, R&B, and even some K-pop kitsch, it doesn't always hit the mark.

The song opens with a laid-back surf rock energy, aiming for a relaxed, poolside vibe. Jiwon leans into a more classic, vintage vocal style, perhaps to complement the track's surf rock influence. However, this choice, combined with the brash synth melodies, can come across as somewhat disjointed. While the intention was not to take things too seriously, the mix of styles can feel a bit unfocused, making it hard to pinpoint the track's identity.

On the positive side, 'autograph' does have a danceable beat and a hypnotic, swirling feel that could appeal to fans of eclectic pop. Jiwon's willingness to experiment and blend genres is commendable, and there's a certain charm to the track's carefree approach.

However, for listeners who are looking for a more cohesive sound or a stronger connection to the emotions behind the music, 'autograph' might feel somewhat lacking. The track's eclectic nature, while unique, doesn't always translate into a compelling listening experience. For those curious about Jiwon's work, this song offers an interesting glimpse into his artistic range, but it might not be the standout track that leaves a lasting impression.
