SINGLE REVIEW: Jack Critchlow - Taste of You

For me Jack Critchlow's 'Taste of You' is a track of two halves. One half that spoke to me deeply. Channeling angst and emotional insecurities. Showcasing exceptional songwriting, tackling gritty hard hitting notions wrapped up in an up-tempo sunshine fueled sound. The other half a somewhat generic, sappy love song which while sounding easy enough on the ear lacked the initial originality and impact.

Coming I with the line "I don't know how to cope with my emotions" following into " when I get close to someone I don't know how to feel" Jack opens himself bear and exposes the battle between irrational thoughts, inner demons and confronting fears; however in the next breath the insecurities are gone and the song moves straight into being loved up, lost in someone's eyes and wanting to spend the night with them. I get what Jack was trying to achieve, a live for the moment and forget your insecurities type statement but I think how it has been presented is a little too blasé and dismissive. From emotional turmoil to being over it nearly instantly just didn't quite work for me. Jack is clearly a very good songwriter and 'Taste of You' could have been so much more than where it ended up as just another love song.

Musically 'Taste of You' has a laid back, chilled out summer vibe. It's a cross between pop and soft rock with beautifully produced vocals. It has a slight reggae tone to the chorus and overall likeable demeanor. Jack has a great voice with a warm personable tone.

If you enjoy a sound that's easy to listen to and want music with a happily ever after you're probably going to really love 'Taste of You' but for me it just didn't quite live up to its potential. I do however think Jack has a lot more to give and I’m excited to see his music progress as he grows and matures as an artist.
