Norwich newcomers Magnolia are pleased to reveal their new single ‘Feed Me’ which is released on 16th July 2024 via brand new local independent label Shake! Shake! Records.
The single is available as a 200 copy limited edition 12” (45rpm) and on the usual digital platforms along with A side ‘Television’.
So far the tracks have been made John Kennedy’s X-Posure Hot One on Radio X, track of the day on James Endeacott’s Soho Radio show, and picked up spins on BBC 6music’s New Music Fix and Amazing Radio.
Commenting on the single, vocalist George Rogers said: “‘Feed Me’ was a track that was written over two main sessions. The initial ideas were written by the rest of the band whilst Daisy and I were at university, and was then completed as a whole band during a rehearsal. The music seemed to come quite quickly, but I didn’t finish the lyrics until the day of recording. They’re somewhat dark, due to an amalgamation of events and feelings in my life that had reached a personal boiling point—if they didn’t come out in this productive and artistic form I'm not sure where I would be emotionally in my life. I find it impossibly difficult to talk about the lyrics as I think it's best to leave it to the audience to decipher. However, I think the feelings they convey when paired with the music are universal and can be felt regardless of any literal meanings.”
Describing themselves as “experimental post-rock from God’s womb” and formed in 2022 whilst still at college, Magnolia are a supercharged fusion of both new and old; an exquisite woven tapestry of avant-garde rock with jabbing, staccato sax leading the assault on the senses. They are wild and gritty yet joyful and uplifting…bursting with method, spirit and feeling.
Thoroughly exciting and accomplished for their young age, the sextet are carving out a growing reputation as captivating live performers on stage (where they expand to an 8 piece line up), evoking a sonic battleground that provides the framework for both a personal and musical unity that is the very lifeblood of the band.
Debut single ‘Television’ was a refreshing 5 minutes 39 seconds of schizophrenic imagery combined with a rare inventiveness and imagination—think Black Midi, Maruja and Opus Kink, then add a pinch of early Hawkwind, a dab of King Crimson, and you’ll find a composition that shows startling originality and progressive excitement.
They have previously opened for the likes of Pulled Apart By Horses, A Void, Arxx and Lunch, and the band played a run of dates throughout the UK during the spring alongside the likes of Klen, Mammoth Penguins, and UFO Rodeo, before entering the studio to record new material for release later in 2024 and early 2025.
Magnolia are a sonic garden of unearthly delights; a garden where each member contributes their own individual bud of colour. Make no mistake, if the almost tangible buzz they’ve created on the Norwich scene is anything to go by, you’ll be hearing a lot more about them.
