Katie Mal releases new single ‘Homesick’

About Katie Mal

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, this indie-rock singer-songwriter has been quietly honing her craft for over a decade, strumming her electric guitar and weaving narratives that capture the essence of life’s highs and lows. Now, in 2024, she’s ready to let the world in on the stories she’s been crafting all these years.

Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of musical influences, Katie’s sound is a love letter to her favourite bands – think the gritty rock ‘n’ roll edge of The Beaches, the infectious rhythms of The Strokes, and the emotionally charged lyrics of Boygenius, mixed with a little Fleetwood Mac. Her music blends these influences into a unique sonic tapestry that’s both nostalgic and refreshingly original.

After a few years of self-discovery and perfecting her sound, Katie is finally committing to her musical journey. Keep your eyes and ears open for what comes next.

ABOUT THE SONG: “Homesick”

“Homesick” is about that feeling you get when you’re far from home and realize how much of yourself you left behind. I wrote it while I was living abroad, missing the energy of Toronto and the things I thought I’d outgrown but couldn’t let go of. It’s for anyone who thought they were ready to leave their hometown, only to realize those familiar places and faces stay with you no matter where you go.

“Homesick” started with that guitar riff you hear right at the beginning. I loved it so much that I wanted to keep it going throughout the whole track. From there, I added lyrics and a melody, and the song kind of wrote itself. It came together on a day when I was really feeling the pull of home. I sent it over to the producer I was working with, and he helped me build out the guitar, bass, and other elements. I recorded the vocals when I was back in Toronto, and that’s when it all really came together.

ABOUT THE SONG: “Nostalgic Girls”

“Nostalgic Girls” is about being stuck between the past and the future, constantly living in your head and feeling disconnected from the present. It’s inspired by those times when you look back on relationships or moments that felt more meaningful than they probably were, and how weird it feels when everything changes. The song invokes the feeling of wishing you could go back to what you thought was a simpler/ happier time.” – Katie Mal
