Joy says of the show:

Welcome to New River Studios. Here, hidden away from the cacophony of culture, I offer a counterpoint: paintings, videos, photos, and poems. Please resist the urge to categorise, to consume. These are not objects or even worse “pieces”, but attempts at meaning in a world drowning in signification.

The art/music world, a grotesque panopticon of taste and capital, transforms creation into currency. An indifference machine, reducing creativity to a game of one-upmanship, a desperate scramble for validation. But these works are not units of exchange, these works are not for sale. They hold no intrinsic monetary value. These works exist outside this economy. They are desperate attempts to articulate the ineffable, to wrest meaning from the void. They are, at best, fragile vessels of the human spirit; at worst, inert matter (paint, canvas, etc…).

Karrel Appel, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin and countless others, have wrestled with this void with far greater eloquence. My offerings are merely a ripple in the vast pool of human experience.  And yet, perhaps in that quietude, there is a space for something else, something beyond the ceaseless churn of culture.

So, wander through… Feel free to laugh, to scoff, to be indifferent. Any response is valid, because in the end, it’s all just noise. Welcome to Graceful Degradation.

Graceful degradation is the ability of a computer, machine, electronic system or network to maintain limited functionality even when a large portion of it has been destroyed or rendered inoperative. The purpose of graceful degradation is to prevent catastrophic failure.

“Lavish... a six minute feast…” - Clash

“Epic” - The Line of Best Fit

“an intelligent, observational lyricism that’s impossible to not immediately be drawn towards.” - The Revue

“It’s a manic display, and utterly compelling from first to last.” - Beats Per Minute on “Wild Joy”

“Joyeria’s blend of bleakly humorous lyricism and lofi production, bolstered by Speedy Wunderground’s Dan Carey, is a quintessential take on fatherhood, responsibility and becoming an adult” - Still Listening
