Kent indie rock/alternative quartet Indoor Pets are today delighted to release their new album Pathetic Apathetic, out now via original label home Alcopop! Records.

Hot on the heels of 3 SOLD OUT nights at The Grace in London and Deaf Institute in Manchester, the band recently announced a run of May 2024 UK headline tour dates, with tickets on sale now (see below for listings), and Indoor Pets will also be appearing at Golden Touch Festival in June and at this year’s 2000 Trees Festival on 10th—13th July, with further festival dates TBA.

Commenting on the album, the band said: “This record has been concocted over several years, with many lyrics asking questions of the UK political landscape as well as our personal development as humans. What’s surprising is that all of these sentiments have felt more relevant than ever in today’s landscape. We set out to make an alt-rock album that we would have wanted to listen to as kids, and we can say with hand on heart that we’ve achieved that.”

A rallying cry against performative activism on social media by artists and influencers who misuse causes for social currency, the band are also sharing the album’s title track and DSP focus track ‘Pathetic Apathetic’, which is out now on all good digital service providers.

Commenting on the single, vocalist Jamie Glass says: “This is our angriest song ever. We’ve always saved our deepest criticisms for ourselves, but here we’re pointing the finger at a social media landscape of artists and influencers that so often preach plastic beliefs to gain points from their fanbases whilst behind-the-scenes are deeply problematic. It’s not about a single person, which is perhaps an acknowledgment that it could be about so many people.”

Pathetic Apathetic’s metal-tinged-indie-anthem lead single ‘London (Love To Hate)’ and gargantuan follow ups ‘Dopamine Girls’ and ‘Stink Eye (My Joy Is Irrational)’ were released earlier this year with multiple radio spins from Alyx Holcombe and Nels Hylton at BBC R1, Tom Robinson and the Indie Forever show at BBC 6music, added to the Amazing Radio B List, and made Record of The Week at BBC Radio Kent.

The singles also smashed onto Spotify’s New Music Friday, All New Rock, The Rock List and shockwave playlists, alongside support from The Arts Desk, LOUDER, DORK Magazine, YUCK Magazine, The Punk Site, Noizze and many more alternative tastemakers.

Featuring the high-pitched snarl of Jamie Glass, the melodic guitar stylings of James Simpson, the rhythmic force of Rob Simpson on drums, and the ribcage-rattling basslines of Oliver Nunn, Indoor Pets have finally returned triumphant from their self-imposed hiatus with the promise of tour dates, a behemoth sophomore album, and a far darker mood.

A band that have never taken themselves too seriously, and now preparing to lay bare their internal angst for all to see, Indoor Pets are no longer pulling their punches.

More info:

Bursting onto the UK scene in 2015 with two incendiary EPs, 001 and Luge Lessons—both under the guidance of indie-label tastemakers Alcopop! Records—the band cultivated a fervent and diverse fanbase with their raucous live shows, contrasting their meticulous indie rock sound. With the band’s setlist blissfully out-of-touch with current trends, gig-goers happily dropped any veil of coolness for a night of euphoric, sweaty singalongs.

They embarked on extensive touring, sharing stages with Weezer, Ash, Spring King, PUP, The Big Moon, Bad Sounds, VANT, The Futureheads and Razorlight. Their music, infused with youthful exuberance, resonated with fan bases across all genres.

In 2019, Indoor Pets marked a pivotal moment with their debut album, Be Content, released under Wichita Recordings. The album, a sprawling compilation of power pop anthems, garnered critical acclaim from publications such as DORK, Gigwise, UPSET, DIY, and Paste, securing a notable Top 10 spot on the prestigious Album of the Year website.

However, in 2020, feeling burnt out and grappling with the tumultuous impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the band made the decision to step back from the music scene. Their once relentless social media feeds lay dormant, and their musical output faded from the public eye.

Fast forward to 2024, and Indoor Pets announce a tantalising return with their new material, venturing into a grittier, heavier, more alternative space. The monolithic wall of fuzz guitars that graced their live shows has now been unleashed onto a discreetly recorded sophomore album. Drawing inspiration from the 1990s with the rich, grunge-laden tapestry of The Smashing Pumpkins, Dinosaur Jr and Nine Inch Nails, their resurgence promises an exhilarating sonic revival for the foursome.
