Sounds for loose ends and lost days, London-based singer-songwriter, Charlie Vaughan completes the release of his ambitious, mood-traversing seven-track EP by releasing the precision-cut, wry-take, piano-and-pity ballad; So Profound. Formerly a songwriting member of talked-about power-pop five-piece, Weird Milk, Vaughan makes his way back to one of his favourite stages in the capital to launch the EP, performing at The Shacklewell Arms on Fri 22 March 2024.

Tracking optimism, overlooked beauty and absurdity in equal measures and cutting the observantly philosophical with dry self-deprecation, the So Profound EP finds Vaughan truly finding his feet as a proponent of the new movement for classic, upbeat song. Portrait after portrait of people and places, some in gloomy rain-dropped corners and others in glistening, mood-lightening sunshine, the So Profound EP offers traces of classic, character-based, intricate songwriting akin to The Beatles to The Kinks and The Divine Comedy.

In a world ready for an alternative to angsty post-punk, Vaughan stands alongside artists like The Last Dinner Party, Lemon Twigs and Weyes Blood as documentarians of modern life freely operating without fear of melody.

As meticulous with visual as well as audio elements, Vaughan’s followers have become accustomed to wide-screen video productions for previous singles, including the surreal episode that was The Director and tautly choreographed splendour of In June. Reading the room when readying the release of So Profound and its sense of spite at worst, thumb-twiddling clock-watching at best, Vaughan took a more DIY approach to finish the run of releases.

Explaining the song, Vaughan says: “It’s narrating a bad day at the office. A monotonous grind that’s endlessly looping. You’ve still got hope that it will change but there’s some inner voice trying to put you down. This is a song that’s not very kind and the narrator definitely deserves a poke in the eye.”

Unrelenting in his pursuit of timeless, offbeat pop, Vaughan’s wry observations on lives both ordinarily and extraordinarily lived are captured across the So Profound EP in full band, jangle pop glory, folky intimacy and piano-led grandeur, playing across and producing the entire recordings independently in a North London box room.

The full track listing is as follows:

1. On The Way
2. I Want You
3. The Director
4. In June
5. Catch Me If You Can, Marianne!
6. So Profound
7. If I Knew

Vaughan’s solo career began in earnest in 2022 with the release of his first single, I Want You, accompanied by yet another not-to-be-missed video. As well as writing and performing all of his own songs as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Vaughan is often found touring as part of other bands throughout the UK and Europe including Trudy and The Romance and Honeymoon.
