Beauty and love have flipsides in brutality and heartbreak and the traffic-stopping voice of new, Liverpool-based alt-pop siren, Evie Moran sings the work of both angels and the devil on her latest alluring, beat-based single How Do You Like Me Now? – OUT NOW on Tri-Tone Records.
A volte-face in recording style, yet underpinned by the necessity of truth-telling words and consciousness-seeping melody, the single pushes the boundary beyond Moran’s renowned ability to bring small venues to silence with deeply affecting, acoustic delicacy. Her 2022 single, Disconnected dropped a pin in the musical map next to Laura Marling and The Staves, yet How Do You Like Me Now? aims for territory occupied by Maggie Rogers and Lorde.
Trials of the heart know no limits when it comes to age and the just 21-year-old singer-songwriter uses grown power as an artist to express equally formidable strength, a manifesto to loosen the clutches of romantic loss.
She says of the track: “I wanted to stray away from my folk roots and lean into the dark/alt pop artists I love such as BANKS and London Grammar. Lyrically the song is about feeling unsupported and unacknowledged in a relationship and the complex ways in which the aftermath of that serves as motivation for self-growth. The line ‘How Do You Like Me Now?’ is ultimately about growing out of that relationship and overcoming the self-doubt that they imprinted onto you”
The chorus to How Do You Like Me Now? was first written when Evie was just 17, showing her prodigious talent existed when the only audience was her bedroom walls. It remained unfinished alongside numerous other ideas yet to see the light of day, yet has now reached its potential with the help of new co-writers Ben Hughes and Leo Martin. The artist and the track re-emerge with a completely fresh mindset and improved confidence, producing what is undoubtedly her most bold and powerful track to date.
Having enjoyed significant support from BBC Introducing as well as BBC 6 Music’s Radcliffe and Maconie, Moran emerges from Merseyside a poorly-kept secret with her appearances at major festivals including Sound City, Threshold Festival and FOCUS Wales justifying the swell of interest around her expanding songbook.
