EP REVIEW: High Eyes - High Eyes EP
London based four piece High Eyes infuse jazzy riffs, upbeat funky tones and playful drums on their self titled debut EP.
The EP is full of big hooks, catchy sounds and smooth vocals delivered in a quirky endearing style. It's indie rock with a twist as it takes inspiration from the brashness of The Streets and the bluesy toll of the Rolling Stones while adding in some of the bands own unique style and personality. It's an addictive listen.
'Tropical' sounds a little Latino and could maybe be likened to a rockier Wham! with its cute groove and up-tempo drums. The vocals are tinged with a slight country rasp. There's an electrifying riff, reverby guitars and an overall sunshine laced feel. It's a fun tune that doesn't take itself too seriously.
'Keegan's Rant' has some funky bass, light drums and captivating husky vocals. There's a great danceable tone to the track. It's the kind of song that I’m sure is going to be a live favourite. It's fast paced, melodic and a bit cheeky.
'Feeling is First' brings the pace down and shows a more mature side to the band. The vocals take on a classic rock stance and the track has a more laid back vibe than the rest of the EP. The chorus builds to an infectious, jangly up-tempo explosion before reverting back to the chilled out origin.
Final track 'Dopamine' brings the tempo back up with a fizzy classic indie sound and soaring guitars. The vocals are understated and pensive. The lyrics deal with looking for release from troubles within superficial things, hoping for a dopamine high. The chorus is massive, bold, confident and compelling.
My final thoughts, it's a valiant effort from a young band who definitely know how to write a catchy tune. They have a fun quirky style that makes them stand out from the crowd however I feel they have some growing to do as songwriters. On most tracks I found it hard to decipher any particular themes and their words often felt a little too flippant. Their sound is great, they have all the right component's to become an excellent rock band and I'm excited to see what the future holds for them.
