New Album, Free Energy, Out Now On Trouble In Mind

“Free Energy is made with a wide-open sense of possibility... It’s a record made to feel, whether that means dancing or getting all shroomed out and staring at the sunset.” — Stereogum

“It’s the sound of a band turning all its potential energy into music that’s dazzlingly kinetic and powerful.”  — Pitchfork

“Dummy is surely one of the most creative rock bands currently working.” — Bandcamp

“On Free Energy, Dummy have incorporated a new palette of sounds that evoke the indie dance floor classics of Stereolab and the gently balearic pulse of Saint Etienne.”
- Uncut Magazine, 8/10

“... More people should be raving about LA quartet Dummy ... ‘Nullspace’ is a perfect distillation of their sound: the synthedelic bubbliness of Stereolab’s bounciest noise bursts, a hooky 90s indie pop drive and the kinetic, hypnotic textures of contemporary avant-pop. Irresistible indeed.” — Shindig! Magazine

Last month, Dummy — the Los Angeles band of Alex Ewell, Emma Maatman, Nathan O’Dell, and Joe Trainor — released their “tuneful, playful and expertly arranged” (Treble) new album, Free Energy, via Trouble In Mind Records.

Ahead of their EU/UK tour, the group shares a new video for Free Energy standout “Dip In The Lake.” A spacious and dream-like track, “Dip In The Lake” is the band’s version of a Velvet Underground song paired with Francesco Messina piano loops and pulsating Cluster synths. “Dip In The Lake” went through countless evolutions during the writing of Free Energy, and offers a spacious, dream-like soundscape, before eventually starting to build tension for the ensuing drop-off.

On the “Dip In The Lake” video, Maatman says, “Because I had the benefit of directing all our music videos for this record, I wanted to take the opportunity to tie them all together somehow. ‘Dip In The Lake’ is a centerpiece for the album musically, so I mirrored that sentiment with this video especially, bringing in elements and scenery from our other music videos to further weave them together. Those who have been paying attention to the Greater DCU (Dummy Cinematic Universe) will definitely pick up on those throughlines.”

Free Energy is all movement, presence, and physicality. A creatively restless band, Dummy wanted to get harder, dancier, a little more psychedelic. Ewell and Trainor began experimenting with home recording while O’Dell dug deeper into instrumental/sample composition, in addition to contributing more guitar leads. Maatman also steps into the spotlight in a big way, her vocals noticeably foregrounded and confident, adding to the live performance feel that forms the foundation of Free Energy. The result is a record that celebrates music’s ability to move the body, whether that be through a teeth-rattling wall of MBV-esque noise, a sticky pop chorus, or a joyous drum machine—or, if you’re Dummy, maybe all of them in the same song.
