(7th June) Norwegian pop sensation Dagny has released new 8 track mini-album 'ELLE' - out today via Universal Music Norway / Little Daggers Records. The first instalment in a trilogy of mini-albums Dagny is planning for release over the coming months, 'ELLE' stands as the long-awaited follow up to her widely acclaimed 2020 debut full length 'Strangers / Lovers'.

'ELLE' includes the previously released singles "Strawberry Dream", "Heartbreak In The Making", "Same Again (For Love)" and "Ray-Bans", and four previously unheard songs including new single "Hate Being Alone". The new body of work follows her sold-out April EU/UK tour earlier this year and her momentous sold-out 10,000 capacity arena headline in Oslo in Norway last November.

Following up on the critical (The Guardian, The Independent, The Metro, BBC Music) and commercial (150 million+ streams and #2 on Norwegian Album Chart) success of her exhilarating debut album 'Strangers / Lovers' was always going to be a mammoth task. In the years that followed its release, Dagny went about breaking down and compartmentalising her emotions, quickly realising there was a lot to unpack.

Never one to shy away from a bold approach, an alluring concept began to take shape which would allow Dagny to assimilate her feelings, all the while retaining her creative songwriting freedom. Enter, ELLE

Speaking on the concept and release of her new mini-album, Dagny said:

“I’d always been a bit nonchalant about the idea of a ‘difficult second record’, but I had to eat my words a little here. I didn’t want to write the same album over again, but finding new things to inspire me musically and personally - turned out to be more challenging than first expected.

Having experimented with a variety of sounds, emotions and subjects, I had all these songs that meant something to me, but I needed to find a way to put them all together in an album. Not wanting to limit myself creatively or emotionally, I started playing around with the concept of different alter egos or amplified versions of myself, as ways of organising the songs.

And so, I decided to call the project 'ELLE', meaning “she" in French.

Creating a character like ELLE first allowed me a creative outlet to share emotions and experiences without feeling like I was oversharing personally - It felt a little easier that way. Ironically though, I think some of these lyrics are my most honest.

The album has the drama arc of a romantic comedy: you gotta go through all the emotions, and at the core of it, there's a hopeless romantic who wears her heart on her sleeve. To me, that's ELLE.

While writing the album, I found myself drawn to the sonic influences that inspired me at different periods of my life. I dived back into the 90s (the decade I was born) and spent hours listening to some of my favourite indie bands, like the Cardigans, and it was their more organic, indie-soundscape that inspired me most during that time. These sounds, as well as songs from the big world of synth pop, give me a sense of escapism and continue to inspire me. They are part of me, and therefore ELLE too!"

"Heartbreak In The Making" is the euphoric opening song on 'ELLE' - a stomping power-pop masterclass acutely highlighting ELLE's reckless streak, providing a valuable lesson in taking heed to early red flags. Then there's "Same Again (For Love)" - a blast of glistening synth-pop which sees ELLE losing sight of herself in the throes of romance, 90's indie-pop inflected cut "Ray-Bans"; awash with melancholy, ELLE's emotions and vulnerability concealed behind a mask...and the propulsive, sugar-sweet "Strawberry Dream" - epitomising the bright, expansive electro-pop that Dagny has refined and perfected in recent years.

For new mini-album 'ELLE', Dagny collaborated with songwriters including Nick Hahn (Rita Ora, Sigrid), Mozella (Miley Cyrus, Rihanna), Oliver Lundström (Carly Rae Jepsen), Cato Sundberg and Kent Sundberg (whom Dagny also worked with on her debut full length) and Maria Hazell (Mabel, ALMA).

The resulting 8 track project is a diverse, honest and dynamic body of work with a consistent, engaging emotional thread running through its veins. Ranging from deeply intimate and vulnerable moments to huge emotionally charged pop songs that will have listeners screaming at the top of their lungs, Dagny has delivered another tantalising snapshot into her pop-powers with ELLE, and this is only the beginning.

Dagny's new mini-album 'ELLE' is out now, released 7th June via Universal Music Norway & Polydor DELittle Daggers Records. Dagny embarks on a busy summer of festivals later this year.
