Boston-based indie trio Constellation Myths to release single ‘Spare Room’ on May 14th ahead of album “The Cost of Living’ due July 16th
Brief Bio
Constellation Myths is guitarist and bassist Josh Goldman, drummer and keyboardist Justin Kehoe, and vocalist Molly Seamans. Born out of the ash heap of a string of Boston-area indie bands, Constellation Myths is founded on the musical partnership of Goldman and Kehoe and the lyric-writing partnership of Kehoe and Seamans.
Constellation Myths release new single "Spare Room"
“Spare Room” is the first glimpse at the Constellation Myths forthcoming album, The Cost of Living. Available May 14th on most major streaming platforms, the lead single from their long-gestating second album is the first release from the Boston-based post-rock Americana outfit since last year’s moody, standalone single “The Moth.” Exploring the disintegration of a marriage and the idiosyncrasies of aging, “Spare Room” opens the album with an immediacy that sets it apart from the nostalgic mood of the band’s 2021 debut, Everything and Time.
“I guess she up and left,” singer Molly Seamans announces in the song’s opening moments, dropping us into the immediate aftermath of a failed marriage. The barest hint of twang in her delivery underscored by the song’s country swing, signals that the band is playing with the tropes of a certain stripe of down-on-your-luck country music (you know the clichés: “my wife left me; I’m crying in my beer, etc.).” “Spare Room” is told from the perspective of a husband, newly single, taking refuge in the titular room above his garage, where he ruminates on what may have been his wife’s parting words: “you found the strangest version of yourself / this isn’t what I signed up for.”
Acoustic guitar is the core of the song that songwriter and guitarist Josh Goldman strums and picks with a subtle country lilt. A prominent backbeat and plucky banjo lend this song an alt-country sensibility, evoking the likes of Neko Case, Wilco, MJ Lenderman. But the gentle country bounce eventually gives way to a rousing climax built around complex vocal harmonies, skittery drums, nervy, overdriven pedal steel, all held together by the grounding bass part played by frequent collaborator, Andy Arch.
Recorded largely at home by the band members between the summer of 2021 and fall of 2023, “Spare Room” is the first of three singles from the forthcoming The Cost of Living lp. This second full length finds the trio seamlessly integrating the post-rock and Americana influences that stood in contrast with each other on the band’s earlier work. With a more direct narrative style, the songs that make up The Cost of Living are preoccupied with things very much at the heart of our current social and political crisis: class resentments, petty jealousies, false prophets, vigilante justice, the warping of our shared sense of reality by a toxic internet culture. The album had its beginnings amidst the uncertainty of the pandemic, and now finds its way into the world during a period that is somehow even more tenuous.’
“Spare Room” drops Wednesday, May 14th, and will be available on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and most other streaming platforms (except Amazon), as well as the band's own website.
The album, The Cost of Living releases digitally and on limited edition vinyl lp on July 16.
