Los Angeles-based rock artist Andrew Browning and the 9 Pound Hammers have released their highly anticipated album, Love is a Beautiful Thing. Available now on all platforms, the album features ten tracks that explore the imperfect, messy, and deeply human experience of love through the band’s signature blend of California rock, Americana grit, and soulful storytelling. Produced by longtime collaborator Derek O’Brien (Social Distortion, Agent Orange) and recorded at 4th Street Recording in Santa Monica, the album captures the essence of the Golden State’s storied soundscape.
At the heart of the album is its title track, "Love is a Beautiful Thing,” a poignant anthem that reflects the record’s overarching themes of humanity and imperfection. With soulful instrumentation and heartfelt lyrics, the song highlights the beauty found in life’s flaws and complexities.
“‘Love is a Beautiful Thing’ is about the messiness of our existence and apropos of the time,” explains Browning. “We search for perfection and fail to see that beauty is in the imperfect around us. I hope that in listening to these songs, people hear and feel their authenticity because that is the whole point of this record.”
Andrew Browning and the 9 Pound Hammers are known for their unique California sound, blending gritty rock, soul, and irreverence. With Love is a Beautiful Thing, the band takes a bold step forward, crafting a sonically rich album that channels the vibrant energy of Los Angeles while exploring themes of love, resilience, and self-discovery.
The decision to record at 4th Street Recording—a studio steeped in California music history—allowed Browning to root the album in the place where much of its material was conceived. “We felt like we wanted to put as much of who we are and where we’re from into this album as possible. We wanted to make it scream ‘California,’” says Browning. “This is an album about the messiness of love, its imperfection, its passion, and its half-heartedness. These very human traits are what make love a beautiful thing.”
Featuring an impressive lineup of musicians—including Chris Lawrence (Mike Ness, Shooter Jennings), John DePatie (Don Randi), Belle Johnson (Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West), Sergio Cardenas (Mana, Pepe Aguilar), and Jake Abernathie (Robert Jon & the Wreck)—the album showcases a production quality and depth that elevates Browning’s storytelling to new heights.
Leading up to the album’s release, Andrew Browning and the 9 Pound Hammers dropped two compelling singles: the hard-driving “Econoline” and the searingly relevant “Preachers of Doom.” Both tracks laid the groundwork for Love is a Beautiful Thing by exploring the struggles of life on the road and rejecting the media-fueled culture of pessimism.
From the raw energy of “Preachers of Doom” to the cinematic storytelling in “Econoline,” Browning’s ability to craft compelling narratives remains a hallmark of his work. The album expands on these themes, presenting a full-bodied exploration of love and resilience, all steeped in the band’s distinctly Californian ethos.
