ALBUM REVIEW: Placebo - Never Let Me Go

Never Let Me Go is the 8th studio album from Placebo.

Formed in 1994, they were pioneers of the gothic-indie rock genre and their sound hasn't changed in decades

Their sound hasn't changed in decades; they still sound as good as they did back in the 90's and remain as relevant today as they were then.

I have to confess, whilst being a fan in the 90's/early 2000's their more recent albums have passed me by and I'm not sure why. I suppose there's just so much music nowadays it's impossible to listen to it all. Never Let Me Go has definitely made me question what I've missed out on and made me want to listen to the albums I missed.

This album really impresses and whilst I don't think the album quite contains any Nancy Boy or Pure Morning classics, it's a fantastic collection of songs. Brian's distinctive voice can be compared to none along with their gothic-indie style which has always set them apart from the rest.

I didn't feel tempted to reach for the skip button at any point although Surrounded by Spies missed the mark slightly I found it a little drab. Songs such as Sad White Reggae sound straight out of the 90's, while Hugz has some incredible dramatic drums and the single Beautiful James was the perfect prelude to the album. My favourite track is undoubtedly Try Better Next Time, a phenomenal song with a chorus that gets lodged in your memory from first listen and is destined to become a future fan favourite.

Overall Never Let Me Go is exactly what you expect from Placebo, a unique blend of arena filling sounds from a band who don't seem to age in sound or image.

Never Let Me Go is out now via So Recordings.
