ALBUM REVIEW: Peaness - World Full of Worry
Right, let's get this bit out of the way....I love Peaness (admit it you laughed?!) I first discovered them when “Same Place” came on another band's Spotify radio and I instantly needed to hear more so I played the EP “Are You Sure?” over and over. There's something about these ladies that despite the risqué name is just so innocent and likeable. Following their journey to releasing “World Full of Worry” on Instagram, I've found myself heart warmed by their excitement and willing them to succeed as much as I would if they were my own friends or family. It still amazes me the power of music and how it can make you feel connected with total strangers.
I had high expectations for the debut release from Peaness and “World Full of Worry” has surpassed every one of them. It's an array of cutsey vocals, playful guitars, bouncing drums and some perfect harmonising. From the first track “Take a Trip” I was hooked.
“Take a Trip” offers a beautiful acoustic sound that really shows just how talented Peaness are, while my personal favourites Kaisen and irl have an excitable, catchy, fun and kitschy sound that you can't help but want to dance to. I started noting down my favourite tracks so I could give them a special mention until I realised I'd written down every track. This album is special, I'd probably go as far as to say my album of the year so far. This week I had two other albums to review, both of which are great but every time I listened I found myself willing them to end so I could go back to “World of Worry”. It's a stunning record. I can’t emphasise that enough.
“How I'm Feeling” has some funky guitars, and a chorus you’ll be humming from first listen. “Doing Fine” sounds like it came straight out of the 90's while “Worry” mixes a heavier sound with some great riffs along with lighter guitars and even includes a quite, haunting more pensive moment. “What's the Use'' is a full speed upbeat indie track with gorgeous vocals. End track “Sad Song” brings the pace down, talking about how people change and grow apart, and shows a more thoughtful side to the band. It makes the perfect ending.
I would say Peaness are for fans of bands such as Kenickie, Lush, The Beths and Fresh. While their sound borrows from other artists overall it's unique, fresh and hard to pigeon-hole.
I'm sure it's obvious but this is the most buzzed I've been about a record in a long time. I challenge you not to fall in love with this band. They head out on tour later this month and I'm so stoked to see them live!
And anyway who doesn't love a bit of Peaness…oh, how I’ll never tire of this band name!
