Today Sunna Margrét shares her new single 'Chocolate' via No Salad Records ahead of her highly anticipated Iceland Airwaves appearance tonight at Fríkirkjan (20:30) and Nov 4th at Smekkleysa (Bad Taste Records) (14:00).
Hailing from Iceland, Sunna Margrét, is a multi-talented artist who wears the hats of an experimental musician and visual artist. Her musical creation takes the form of experiential left-field pop, a genre that reflects her inspirations drawn from the likes of FKA Twigs, Björk, and Massive Attack.
Her musical journey began at the young age of six, and she officially entered the music industry during her teenage years with the widely celebrated Icelandic electro-pop ensemble Bloodgroup, after renowned composer Ólafur Arnalds introduced her to the band, after they had worked on a movie score together. He often made string arrangements for the band’s work. She toured with Bloodgroup internationally, and they received high acclaim from noteworthy publications such as The Guardian and The Line of Best Fit, with frequent comparisons to the innovative soundscapes of The Knife.
Her previous works have earned her high acclaim, with support from The Line of Best Fit and The Wire. Her 2019 EP 'Art of History' was honored with the Kraumur Award, which is the Icelandic equivalent of the UK's Mercury Prize. The EP also secured nominations for 'Song of the Year' and 'Album of the Year' in the electronic category at the Iceland Music Awards. Her 2023 conceptual EP, 'Five Songs for Swimming,' received accolades from the respected Icelandic music critic Arnar Eggert Thoroddsen, who eagerly anticipates a full-length release.
In addition to her musical endeavors, Sunna Margrét is an accomplished visual artist who frequently marries her music and art, creating immersive audio-visual installations that captivate the senses. She sees art as a form of resistance and this motivated her to co-found DIY label No Salad Records with her husband Stéphane Kropf. The label became a place for Margrét to foster her own artistic visions and collaborations, presenting artists from all over the world, across a multitude of genres including avant-garde, electronic and post-punk.
Sunna Margrét now returns with new material, with newfound inspiration drawn from motherhood and a deep dive into the world of Ableton, paving the way for exploration into uncharted musical territories.
Her latest single, 'Chocolate', is the result of a unique and collaborative artistic process with her friend and musical partner, Maxime Graf. Acting as her musical paintbrush, Sunna Margrét guided Graf by presenting him with musical references and specific instruments, each adding a distinct layer to the song. This method resulted in the creation of the new single.
‘Chocolate’ explores the concept of a 'luxury problem.' It delves into the hypothetical scenario of time travel, where one could alter a moment in their life but must grapple with the potential loss of everything they hold dear. Sunna Margrét presents this left-field pop gem with a captivating blend of pulsating beats and profound bass, all led by her enigmatic voice, carrying a poignant mix of melancholy and determination. Imagine the meeting of Jenny Hval and Celia Mancini in a musical landscape.
The single is accompanied by a music video filmed and directed by Swiss/German multidisciplinary artist Miriam Laura Leonardi that was filmed at Les Eterpis bio farm in Gollion, close to Sunna’s current home in Switzerland.
