New album Spiral Your Way Out out January 10th on Lex Records

"emerging from their bedroom-pop cocoon with an album that turns heartache into stardust. ‘Spiral Your Way Out’ isn’t evolution, it’s emotional alchemy at its finest." - Dork

“[zzzahara] captures a very contemporary, very mixed, and very online sonic aesthetic – a sort of gaze-y, post-indie and synth-heavy sound downstream of 2010s bedroom pop, Mac Demarco, Slowdive, and the Durutti Column.”

Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter zzzahara shares the new single, “It Didn’t Mean Nothing,” from their forthcoming album Spiral Your Way Out, out January 10th on Lex Records. The opening track of the album follows previous singles “If I Had To Go I Would Leave the Door Closed Half Way” and "Ghosts.” A cocktail of jangly riffs, walking bass lines and emotional sting, “It Didn’t Mean Nothing” brings a newfound jagged edge to zzzahara’s usual open-hearted confessionalism. “I was so mad I couldn’t think / All I did was lay in bed and scream,” they lament.

It’s the first track zzzahara worked on with one of the album’s range of producers, Jorge Elbrecht (Japanese Breakfast, No Joy, Sky Ferreira). “Jorge had the drum pattern and guitar already prepared,” says zzzahara. “I felt like I knew what I had to say when I started writing lyrics. I really held my problems in at the time so sitting there making music with Jorge felt like the escape I needed. We pulled that track together in just under four hours. It was magical. For the first time it felt like I met someone who worked as fast as I did.”

zzzahara’s approach to songwriting is an instinctive one, and the headspace of Spiral Your Way Out was the result of taking a more instinctive approach to life in the aftermath of a breakup. One of the biggest influences on the album was embracing a side of themselves they moved away from on last year’s Tender–going out, “spiraling,” meeting all sorts of weirdos and collecting the kinds of experiences that make for good stories if nothing else. “My whole life, all I've known is destruction. Having a dysfunctional family, trying to figure out where I lie in this world... I feel like that’s the kind of life I lead. Very spirally, very chaotic. It’s one big fucking mystery,” they smile. “It takes so long for me to feel comfortable in any place, but working on not giving a fuck has been my vibe recently. Like, I could spiral out of control, but that ’s just who I am. That's what I figured out at the end of this journey: I don’t need all this therapy. I don’t need to be sober. I can just be, and it'll be okay.”
