Tyler's wordless music offers an ethereal and ambient-minded take on country and folk.” — The New York Times

[‘Cabin Six,’ “Concern,’ and ‘Star of Hope,’] feel almost like a suite, together comprising a triptych of atmospheric, otherworldly psychedelic abstraction.” — Treble

Earlier this year, Nashville-based guitarist/composer William Tyler announced his new album Time Indefinite, out April 25th via Psychic Hotline. The album has already landed on Pitchfork’s “Most Anticipated Albums of Spring 2025” and All Music’s “Anticipated 2025 Albumslists, and today, he releases the new piece, “Anima Hotel.” On the heels of the previously released trio of singles “Cabin Six,” “Concern,” and “Star of Hope,” described by Stereogum as “posess[ing] a sense of mystery and wonder,” “Anima Hotel” is a supple love song taking inspiration from Carl Yung, highlighting the spiritual and philosophical approach on Time Indefinite

In Tyler’s words, “Carl Jung used the term anima to refer to the unconscious divine feminine within the man. So often in romantic love we are seeking both the magical other and if anything, the mirror to align with the different parts of our psyche that we project. I imagine this as kind of like a love song I wrote to different people, all of us having to stay at one of those middle-of-nowhere airport motels awaiting a flight to be rescheduled.”

No other solo American guitarist this century has impacted that fecund scene quite like William Tyler. After crucial stints in Silver Jews and Lambchop, this adopted son of Nashville emerged at the dawn of the last decade with a string of inquisitive albums that paired the measure of his country rearing and classical enthusiasm with his ardor for post-modern experimentation, field recordings and static drifts folded beneath exquisite melodies.

On the brilliant, bracing, and inexorably beautiful Time Indefinite, Tyler’s first solo album in six years, he steps at last into the widening gyre he helped create. The guitar serves as a starting point for an album that will make you reconsider not only Tyler but also the possibilities and reach of an entire field. A vortex of noise and harmony, ghosts and dreams, anguish and hope, Time Indefinite is not a great guitar record. It is a stunning record—a masterpiece of our collectively anxious time, really—by a great guitarist.
