Newcastle melodic punk newcomers Wild Spelks are proud to reveal the official video for their new single ‘Getting The Band Back Together Again’ which is released on 22nd May 2024.

Directed by Kristian Young and featuring bigfatbig frontwoman Robyn Walker on guest vocal duties, the huge new track and accompanying video are jam-packed with the nostalgia and rush of excitement that comes from those first early forays into band life, and discovering the rush of playing music with your best friends.

If the chanted chorus refrain—‘distortion fizzes in my ears, I’ll play this song for a hundred years’—doesn’t hit you right in the teen angst practice sessions, did you ever even band?

Commenting on the new single, Sabiston says: “I think this is the best song I’ve ever written (so far), the epitome of Wild Spelks—a song about friendship, youth, and playing in bands. My inspiration for the song was Blue album Weezer, Bleed American Jimmy Eat World, and that fun era of pop rock. Featuring the legendary vocals of Robyn from North East band bigfatbig too, really bringing a joyous feel to the chorus. We've also been so lucky to have Kristian Young direct the video for this track, he’s done an incredible job in creating the feel of nostalgia and practising in bedrooms, like we used to when we were younger.”

‘Getting The Band Back Together Again’ is the final single to be taken from Wild Spelks’ debut EP A House Full Of Strangers, set for release on 21st June 2024, and available to preorder now: https://ffm.to/ahousefullofstrangers

The EP was produced, mixed, and mastered by songwriter/musician/producer Jonathon Sabiston throughout 2023 at home in his Newcastle flat, with drum takes recorded at Blank Studios, Newcastle with engineer Chris McManus (Pit Pony, Du Blonde, TV Death).

The new single follows on from previously-released tracks ‘Take It From A Friend’ and ‘Help Myself’ which were released earlier this year and picked up support from alternative tastemakers at Rock Sound, VISIONS, NARC. Magazine, Already Heard, God Is In The TV Zine, Maximum Volume and more.

Following appearances at Exit Music Festival alongside English Teacher and a support slot with fellow Geordies Fast Blood earlier this month, Wild Spelks will support local favourites Weekend Faithful on 27th May @ Lubber Fiend, Newcastle, with further live shows TBA.

More info:
Formed in 2020, Wild Spelks is the solo material vessel of songwriter/musician/producer Jonathon Sabiston. What started as a collection of voice notes and demos expanded exponentially upon the release of their debut single, ‘The Happy Places’. Picking up support from the likes of Clash Magazine, CLOUT, Narc Magazine and Yack Magazine, the project quickly developed into a full live band culminating in selling out their debut headline show at Newcastle venue Bobiks.

When performing live, Wild Spelks are lucky to have had a rotating line-up of North East musicians from such bands as Them Things, Sam Fender, The Welcome Party, Holy Moly & The Crackers and more.

Eager to maintain their early upward trajectory, Wild Spelks have regularly followed up their notable debut with the release of a successful string of standalone singles over the past few years including ‘Turn It Around’ (2020), ‘Dreamer’ (2021), Nine By Sixteen (2021), ‘Hail Mary’ (2022), and ‘Black Spores’ (2022).

Sabiston’s ability to write hooky, scuzzy alt-rock has already won him early plaudits from the likes of Punktastic and Classic Rock Magazine.

Taking their name from the pangs of anxiety that dig into Sabiston like a splinter whenever he is feeling panicked, “spelks” is local Newcastle dialect for a splinter, with the “wild” prefix defining the sheer out-of-the-blue timing of the attacks.

Mining a rich seam of melodic punk and alt-rock that should resonate with fans of Cold Years, The Menzingers, and Hot Water Music there’s also a tinge of the lo-fi sensibilities of the likes of Grandaddy and They Might Be Giants about their joyfully melancholy sound. As with all Wild Spelks’ material, all instrumentation on the record is performed, recorded, and mastered by Sabiston himself.

“However, just to confirm the forever-rumoured existence of a loving, supportive community of musicians in Newcastle, I have been so kindly guided and supported through the process by Chris McManus (Du Blonde, Pit Pony) and Paul Gregory (Lanterns on the Lake, Mastersystem),” he adds.

“I’m so grateful for their contributions to the process, whilst mainly working on my own is a huge part of the Wild Spelks ethos, it can really leave you overthinking some elements of a song, whilst completely missing other parts that need attention.”
