Friday 28th & Saturday 29th April 2023

Back in black and before you know it… TOMORROW’S GHOSTS FESTIVAL’S SPRING GATHERING is almost here.

Following an exceptional demand for tickets for the Halloween event in 2022, Whitby’s premier Goth music led festival will return to Whitby Pavilion on Friday 28th & Saturday 29th April 2023. It will be the first such seasonal offering for over 4 years.

A true celebration of all things Gothic, Tomorrow’s Ghosts invites you back to the home of Dracula for a darkly exhilarating weekend of alternative music and culture. And with an international line-up that caters to a broad range of sub-genres and tastes, the 2023 programme is offering plenty to get your teeth into…

An exclusive Friday headline appearance from the cult darkwave visionaries Cold Cave, who fifteen years into their career have established themselves as long-running luminaries of the underground and worthy headliners for any connoisseur of sonic carnage. Sublime supporting sets across the evening will also come from Leeds’ legendary goth-rock originals The Rose of Avalanche and UK-Irish post/punk acolytes Siberia.

The Friday will also be blessed by a performance from very special guests: Christian Death. The founding fathers of American goth rock have been at the epicentre of a swirling maelstrom of riots, bomb threats, extremist religious group protests, and untouchable Gothic masteries since their formation in LA in 1979;  and will be bringing their notorious live show to Whitby this April.

Following up on the Saturday night, Yorkshire-formed titans New Model Army will be continuing the celebrations for their 40th Anniversary in seismic style. Earlier in the night, expect a *very special guest* slot from Lebanon Hanover, with the shadowy British-German duo bringing their evocative darkwave sounds out to play for this very rare UK appearance. Elsewhere, Mancunian industrialists in ascendance IST IST will be performing songs from their highly anticipated third album ‘Protagonists’, plus expect a theatrical set from revived gothic rock devotees The Nosferatu when they glide in as *special guests*.

Both evenings, Tomorrow’s Ghosts will also be offering choice club nights into the early hours, with Leeds’ living legends Carpe Noctum taking the reins to host a delectably dark death disco of their design at the Whitby Pavilion.

As with the 2022 edition, the Tomorrow’s Ghosts festival will be partnering with the Sophie Lancaster Foundation. A charity committed to stamping out prejudice, hatred and intolerance everywhere, the ideals of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation and Tomorrow's Ghosts couldn’t be any closer aligned. 15 years on from Sophie’s tragic passing in a vile hate-related crime, Tomorrow’s Ghosts will be supporting the exceptional work of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation throughout the weekend.

THE LINE UP

NEW MODEL ARMY

New Model Army recently celebrated over 40 years of performing and recording with a series of delayed 40th Anniversary shows at the back end of 2021, on those shows they played astonishing sets culled from their outstanding seventeen album back catalogue . The shows were as ever rapturously received by one of the most loyal followings in live music which includes an increasing number of young followers.  Formed in Bradford in 1980, New Model Army’s beginnings were inspired by Northern Soul, Punk Rock and the incendiary atmosphere of the times. Since then, they have had a long, creative and eventful journey. They have been massively influential in ‘post-punk’, ‘folk-rock’, ‘political-rock’, ‘goth’, ‘metal’ and all kinds of musical sub-cultures but they have steadfastly refused to belong to any club or style that would limit them.

Even without a specific ‘genre’ audience, New Model Army still have album sales in the millions, have attracted some of the biggest producers on the planet (Glyn Johns, Tom Dowd, Andy Wallace, Bob Clearmountain, Joe Barresi) and have built up an almost religious devotion amongst fans. There are very few bands in NMA’s position of being able to record and release what they like when they like, while maintaining a worldwide following and all without making a single artistic or commercial compromise.

COLD CAVE

Since Cold Cave’s inception in 2007, the group has released an astounding number of singles, LP’s, EP’s, and compilations, and have become synonymous with the modern-day resurgence of darkwave and synth-pop. Founder and frontperson Wesley Eisold is a multi-disciplinary artist whose body of work continues to reverberate throughout the subterranean arts scene and beyond.  Eisold has gained mass appeal in various sects of underground music, influencing underground and popular culture with his deft and poetic nimble artistic vision. This has propelled Cold Cave to perform at world class museums The Getty and The Guggenheim, and perform alongside legends The Jesus and Mary Chain and Nine Inch Nails among others. Eisold, along with multi-instrumentalist Amy Lee, carry the torch for modern post-punk on this timeless and alluring new release. Their efforts stretch across mediums into their book publishing company, Heartworm Press ,and brick and mortar store in Los Angeles, The Daily Planet, where they have released the written work of Alan Vega of Suicide, Genesis P-Orridge of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV and Mark Lanegan. From their primordial noise industrial beginning to their shimmering synth pop, Cold Cave have established themselves as long-running luminaries of the underground and beyond.

CHRISTIAN DEATH

Since their formation in LA in 1979, the career of Christian Death has been a swirling maelstrom of riots, bomb threats, extremist religious group protests, and untouchable Gothic masteries. With a notorious appetite for provocation, the band have earned a reputation for their relentlessly confrontational stand against organised religion and conventional morality. Throwing down the gauntlet with their game-changing debut album ‘Only Theatre of Pain’ in 1982, the band laid out a blueprint for four decades of shock and awe from there on.

Through graphic cover art and lurid lyricism, the Death have always revelled in themes of blasphemy, morbidity, drug use, and sexual perversity; dividing the masses and leaving a trail of destruction. No strangers to the UK, the band moved to London in the mid-Eighties where they would then record some of their most acclaimed and antagonistic works, including the album ‘Sex and Drugs and Jesus Christ’, which depicted a controversial image of Jesus shooting heroin. Also recorded during this time was the No.12 UK Independent Chart single “Church Of No Return”, a track that would ultimately earn the band mainstream media attention from the likes of MTV, VH1, Super Channel, the BBC and countless other Euro television and radio shows… Whilst simultaneously inciting public burnings of their records by Christian organisations over in the USA. For all the chaos that has shadowed their existence, Christian Death remain as prolific and controversial as they have ever been. A band in rude health and revolutionary form, they released their 17th studio album in 2022: ‘Evil Becomes Rule’; a record that found them simultaneously perfecting and redefining their signature sound with an intoxicating mix of gothic rock, post-punk, and dark pop.

LEBANON HANOVER

NOSTALGIA IS NEGATION. SADNESS IS REBELLION. An ice cold reply to the alienated world coming from two warm beating hearts. The duo of Larissa Iceglass and William Maybelline appear as true romantics of the modern age, admiring William Wordsworth, fascinated by the beauty of art nouveau aesthetics, exploring British seashores and forests at night as well as inspired by the urbanism of Berlin.

The release was supported by a ten-date UK tour including sold out shows at venues such as Manchester Academy, Camden Assembly, The Louisiana in Bristol and the prestigious Hebden Bridge Trades Club. In April 2022 the band were the Very Special Guests to The Mission at their Manchester and London shows. 2023 is going to be a great year for IST IST.

THE ROSE OF AVALANCHE

The Rose of Avalanche, formed in Leeds in 1984, came to prominence following heavy airplay of their debut single, the “apocalyptic epic” L.A. Rain, by the BBC disc jockey, John Peel. BBC Sessions with Peel and Janice Long followed and L.A. Rain sat proudly at number 26 in Peel’s 1985 Festive Fifty, above songs by The Cure, The Smiths and The Sisters of Mercy.

The band continued to dominate the indie scene of the period, with follow-up singles, Goddess, Too Many Castles in the Sky, Velveteen and Always There, all topping the indie charts. Successful tours supporting The Mission and support slots with David Bowie followed, but just as the band looked set for mainstream success, their meteoric rise was halted by a series of legal wrangles with their record label, leading to the eventual dissolution of the band.

Magnificently raw, beautiful and loud, The Rose of Avalanche are back to reclaim their rightful place at the top table of alt/goth/rock music.
