(12th November) Rising Stockholm newcomers tibia today release their new single "Molly in Mexico," arriving off the back of two nights supporting Royel Otis earlier this month. It follows their snarling debut single "Two weeks of Gloria" and the danceable indie of "Mary's Lifestyle", drawing early tastemaker support from The Line of Best Fit, Dork Magazine, Far Out Magazine, Ones To Watch, Record Of The Day & more.
New single "Molly in Mexico" arrives today alongside a video capturing 24 hours tibia spent in Mexico City, from the back seat of a car. A surge of intoxicating indie-rock with a distinct punk energy, the song touches upon themes of fleeting connections and missed opportunities, encapsulating a sense of restlessness and a desire for change.
Speaking on the release of new single "Molly in Mexico," tibia commented:
"Around and around and around in the same city. The night is starting to feel dull, ur kind of heartbroken and drugs are 100% boring. Tried becoming a morning person who starts the day with a silly little run and drinks water before coffee. Nothing is really working tho. Maybe u just gotta leave ur life and go somewhere that feels like: 'Sunriiiiiiise!!!!'
The song is about having ur eyes on the prize and no looking back. Maybe the prize is 1 million euro, a spiritual awakening or talking to the babe in the bar - it doesn’t matter as long as ur doing it. Like Madonna used to say, it’s just a little prayer on ur knees :)<3”
tibia is Vide Willemark and Elias Sahlin (Vide - an in demand songwriter and producer across the breadth of Sweden & Elias - a Swedish Grammy nominated musician and artist in his own right).
Making their live debut earlier this summer at Way Out West festival in Gothenberg alongside Big Thief and Jack White, the duo quickly returned to Stockholm that same week to play a sold-out, frenzied rooftop headline show of their own - quickly establishing themselves as hot prospects in Sweden.
Best friends from school, Elias and Vide drifted apart in their mid-twenties. They knew that something had to be done. With that, they agreed to meet up again at a trashy bar across the street from Vide's studio in Stockholm to put the world to right.
It was there the two old friends quickly reconnected, reminiscing about their past, their friendship and the music they grew up on. tibia was born.
Soon after that night - reunited and reinvigorated by their shared past - they ventured back to the Stockholm high school basement where their friendship began, to build the foundations of what would become an album's worth of new songs. Operating with the most basic of recording set-ups, it was there the pair wrote and recorded 30+ tracks amidst a burst of unprecedented creativity and drive.
tibia is a project rooted in friendship and the indelible threads that bind humans together. The music Elias and Vide are making is defiantly looking to the future, whilst retaining an appreciation of their forebears.
Writing and producing together without prestige, embracing their mutual love for indie-pop, garage, pop punk and their shared admiration for acts including Suicide, The Sugarcubes, Gorillaz, The Undertones, MGMT and Nirvana - tibia are looking for meaning in a warped nightlife where it’s all about chasing highs and running from lows.
"Molly in Mexico" - the new single from tibia is out now. tibia will reveal details of their debut full length project in 2025.
