The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs share "Call The Dogs" EP
Heavy Medication is proud to welcome Los Angeles veteran punks The Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs into their growing rock & roll family with the release of a new four-song e.p. titled Call The Dogs.
This e.p. is the first new Cheetahs material since their critiacally acclaimed One More Drink album from 2021, and it’s the first of two Cheetahs releases Warsaw-based Heavy Medication Records will release this year. It features the brand new cuts “Long Haul,” “‘80s Baby,” “Victim of the Service Industry,” and the title track. The digital and 10” vinyl versions of the e.p. will hit the streets March 15 to coincide with the start of the band’s tour of Spain, which is their first promotional jaunt through Europe in over 20 years. (Another e.p. will be released simultaneously via Madrid’s Ghost Highway Recordings.)
The Cheetahs feature a who’s who of rock ‘n’ roll cult heroes. The band is fronted by
acclaimed vocalist/guitarist Frank Meyer, who also heads sleaze-rock supergroup Trading Aces, sings with Rock ’N’ Roll Hall of Famer James Williamson of Iggy and the Stooges, and recorded a recent album with Eddie Spaghetti of The Supersuckers. Original member Dino Everett (bass) is known for his stints with Walter Lure, Kevin K, and his band Legendary Swagger, while drummer Mike Sessa is best known for his work with The Joneses, Rosie Flores, and Cracker. The band is rounded out by vet Bruce Duff on guitar, known for his time in Jesters of Destiny, 45 Grave, and ADZ.
The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs were formed in 1995 Los Angeles as a for-kicks cover band, swiping their name from the opening line of Iggy and the Stooges classic “Search & Destroy.” Discovered by late, great indie power pop impresario Greg Shaw of Bomp Records, the band issued their debut album Heart Full of Napalm on Alive in 1996, returning a year later with Overdrive. Later in 1997, the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs also backed guitarist Deniz Tek on covers of Radio Birdman hits "Do the Pop" and "More Fun." The following year, they repeated the trick, this time collaborating with singer Cherie Currie on a re-recording of her Runaways classic "Cherry Bomb." Live on KXLU followed in 1999 receiving rave press reviews, and the band shared stages with The White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age, Turbonegro, Reverend Horton Heat, Fishbone and others. Tours backing up MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer and the New York Dolls’ Sylvain Sylvain followed. 2001’s album Waiting for the Death of My Generation won the title of Best Punk Album in 2002’s New Times Reader's Poll and was supported by touring with the likes of Bellrays, Supersuckers, Zeke, New Bomb Turks, Amazing Crows, Fear, Dickies, and DOA. A reissue of Overdrive (titled Maximum Overdrive and filled with bonus tracks) was followed by rarities collections Red Tape Diaries and Guitars, Guns and Gold, and the live album Resurrection in 2006. After a hiatus, the band returned in 2014 with the "Escape From New York City” 7" vinyl single and a West Coast tour with Chetah Chrome.
In 2021, the Cheetahs released their first album in nearly two decades, One More Drink, on Dead Beat Records. The album featured 11 new songs and guest appearances by John Easedale of Dramarama, Rikk Agnew of The Adolescents and Paul Roessler of The Screamers. In early 2023, the album was re-released on CD as the Deluxe Edition by Rum Bar Records with a bonus track. The previous year, Rum Bar Records also released the double-CD collection All The Covers (And More), which features guest stars Wayne Kramer, Cherie Currie, Jimmy Zero, Deniz Tek, Jeff Dahl, and many more.
