Some bands live in their music and, as a result, get it right first time. Only forming during their school days three years ago, riffing Stockport four-piece, The Rolling People’s rapid ascent is shaking rivets loose as they release their debut EP, Before It’s Gone, and start the four-month countdown to the biggest homecoming show of their lives this December at Manchester’s legendary O2 Ritz.

Their first vinyl release and first collection of songs out on LAB Records (Antony Szmierek, Seb Lowe, The K’s), the six track EP shows a band born ready. 2024 has already found them taking easily to bigger stages, including their debut Isle of Wight Festival appearance and tearing up Manchester’s O2 Victoria Warehouse. Alongside effusive songwriting in the finest of British big field indie and sticky-dancefloored traditions, The Rolling People’s intelligence and ambition sounds an alarm of inevitability for even bigger things to come.

As the Before It’s Gone EP starts to land on playlists and turntables, front man and songwriter, Charlie McNichol takes fans through each track, giving a glimpse behind the studio and practice room doors.

I’ll Be There
“We wanted to have ‘I’ll Be There’ as the opening track as it really encapsulates the energy and desire we have as a band to keep improving live and in the studio. It all stemmed from a bass line that Asa was playing in a rehearsal that we just started jamming along to, and within about half an hour we had the full structure and melodies. I guess ‘I’ll Be There’ is about looking for that unknown person who’s going to bring some light to a pretty dull world.”

Grateful For Nothing
“It's a great opener to a live set and has a grand, sort of glam sound to it, which is created by the soaring lead lines and the relentless stomp of George’s kick drum. I wanted to write a chorus that was uplifting and made people feel hopeful. The lyrics are laced with the feelings of a lack of power, frustration and the sudden realisation that nothing in life is handed to you on a plate. You have to go out and create your own destiny, not live by the monotonous norms of the day-to-day. I want whoever’s listening to ignore the people that try to tell them that they aren’t good enough.”

Before It’s Gone
“’Before It’s Gone’ is the title track as I think it was a turning point in our songwriting, where we went up a level and could really start to understand and play on our strengths as a band when writing. I brought in the bare bones of the tune; everyone jammed it through a few times and it was there. Much like the previous track, it is a hopeful song about aiming high and going for what you’ve set out to do before the opportunity has passed.”

The Thief
“’The Thief’ opens up Side B with a bang. This is the rockiest tune on the EP and we wanted it to make an instant impression on the listeners with the aggressive guitar riff. It is always the song in the live set that makes the crowd go mad and brings up the energy massively. The lyrics focus more on the power struggle that the common man has with those in charge and is a sort of spit at the people that are pulling the strings from above.”

No Place To Be
“This is one of the songs that we are proudest of. “No Place To Be” is a grand-sounding track that is aggressive and edgy in the intro and choruses but also soft in the verses. We wanted it to move like this to show the weaving in and out of frustration as a feeling. It took influence from some more post-punk records, combined with the indie rock sound and big choruses we already had, and it turned out just as we wanted. It was definitely the most fun to record in the studio and we experimented the most creatively with this one.”

Better Man (Acoustic)
“We included ‘Better Man (Acoustic)’ as it has been a fan favourite for some time. People always seem to go back to an acoustic session of ‘Better Man’ that we recorded a while back, but we feel we have progressed a lot since, so it made sense to re-record it rather than release it as it was. It is much richer and more developed than before, with more layers and harmonies. It’s a gift back to the fans for being so supportive of us over the last couple of years.”

No small amount of in the know industry attention has headed in The Rolling People’s direction since the release of the EP’s first single, I’ll Be There, back in February, including XS Manchester and Radio X X-Posure playlist status. Whilst radio, streaming and social media brings some satisfaction, it’s on stage where The Rolling People live their rock and roll dreams and their energies are now focused on Sat 21 Dec 2024 and their one-night spectacular at the O2 Ritz in Manchester.

The Rolling People’s signing to LAB Records and numerous, audience-growing live opportunities comes off the back of rapid, independently-charged successes. The 2023 self-release of their fan-favourite single, Better Man, hit No.1 on the iTunes Rock Chart and No.14 on the iTunes Official Chart, launching them instantly to a broad audience of guitar-based indie fans hungry for new heroes.
