The Racing Pulses share single ‘Hidden Away From the Sunlight’
A new single from The Racing Pulses – “Hidden Away From the Sunlight” – is, unlike the title suggests, garnering attention from alternative rock fans. Packed with fast bass notes, metallic guitar tones, searing synth lines, and drum beats which are like a sonic stampede at some points, it is one of the heaviest cuts to be released by the musical project based in Madison, Wisconsin.
Originally created for a video game music contest where winning songs became part of the soundtrack of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, the recording session for “Hidden Away From the Sunlight” was fast because The Racing Pulses needed to meet the competition’s deadline quickly.
“I was writing lyrics the day of the studio session. I was working under pressure, but I think it turned out well once I got in the vocal booth!” Kristian Petrov Iliev, the creator of the music project’s pseudonym, commented.
That urgency and confidence is transmitted in everything from the tempo of the song, to the gritty-yet-retro-polished production applied by audio engineers Brian Liston and Max Jewer of Clutch Sound, a studio in Wisconsin’s capital. This is also the first recording by The Racing Pulses to feature bassist and synth player Daniel Dougherty, whose smooth and catchy notes are augmented with effects, giving the song a stellar atmosphere. Another aspect of this recording which differentiates it from other entries in the discography of The Racing Pulses is an interesting vocal effect which never overpowers, yet adds some oomph and new dimensions to Iliev’s performance.
Summarizing his overall thoughts on the new track and how it came to life, Iliev added, “I submitted an early version of this song, which ultimately wasn’t selected as a winner, but I had fun in the studio and thought the music was worthy of sharing with a larger audience. Although the song did not win a place in the video game, we tried something new, and I am proud of the outcome.”
