The Open Flames release second single “Eat Alone”

An electric squall of feedback over a thundering drum fill announces the stormy second single by The Open Flames, ‘Eat Alone,’ ahead of their debut album Same Time Next Year.

Following hard on the heels of their cinematic pop-noir single ‘Drop a Coin,’ ‘Eat Alone’ is a cruising rock juggernaut that could have been born in the same year that Neil Young was touring with Sonic Youth and R.E.M. was writing their distorted glam masterpiece Monster. Lyrically, singer Dave Eastman brings an unsparing eye to the bond that unites a caregiver and their loved one in their final moments. But in Eastman's reverb-drenched delivery is a sardonic edge, and in the roaring guitars and rocking band is all the vitality of life itself. In concert with Paige Brubeck’s light-touch backing vocals and the deep rhythm connection of Evan Sult on drums and Brubeck on bass, ‘Eat Alone’ is a cathartic statement of defiance and rage against the dying of the light.

"'Eat Alone' is about when you want to help someone who's hurting, and they don't want the help," explains Dave Eastman. "It's a heartbreaking situation that we try to show through a caregiver's pleas — and memories — and the noise of the song."

Composed of members of New York-based Sleepy Kitty and Harvey Danger (of ‘Peep Show’ theme song) and London’s Say Yes, Do Nothing, The Open Flames bring equal parts attitude and experience to their rough-edged, literate alt-rock. Recorded during biannual sessions in London, ‘Same Time Next Year’ took shape via international listening sessions, focused practices, and sometimes raucous hangouts. Coming after the critically acclaimed debut single ‘Drop A Coin,’ ‘Eat Alone’ brings new dimensions to The Open Flames’ melodic storytelling and richly ranging sonic textures.
