Fresh from their biggest UK Tour to date, Manchester’s The Deep Blue complete their new Sugarcoat EP – OUT TODAY. Dropping deep-thinking bangers since early spring and now looking ahead to a packed festival season, all four songs from the quartet’s latest EP - spanning pre-disco, patriarchy-stripping pop and shimmering, soulful outlines of painful heartaches past - come together in a collection that speaks both for itself and for every listener who might find refuge in the band’s collective courage, sisterhood and songcraft.
Having launched with the wildly infectious HAIM-by-Prima Queen protest bop, How About It? earlier this year, then returning to folkier sensibilities for the biographical Lost Boy before crushing collective emotions with Lakehouse, the band adds the meditative, acapella masterpiece of Something Good to complete the set. The delicate finale showcases, if ever there was doubt, the band’s unassailable capability for minimalist brilliance.
The remaining long days of the year look as positive for The Deep Blue as those that got summer underway in June, memories living long after they played their biggest headline shows ever, including a SOLD-OUT Camden Assembly date and another memorable homecoming at Deaf Institute in Manchester. Back on even bigger stages where they belong, this month sees them playing Truck Festival thanks to votes from both So Young Magazine and Radio X’s John Kennedy, before taking on Tramlines in Sheffield, Y Not Festival in Derbyshire, Herefordshire’s Nozstock and Victorious on the south coast in Portsmouth.
The band says of the EP: “It came together from conversations that we had at rehearsals about growing up. Reaching adulthood is a painful affair at times we all take turns leaning on each other. This is our coming-of-age EP with songs for the pivotal moments of this strange and wonderful life. Newfound freedom is glorious but trimmed with a little darkness that we must all grapple with throughout our lives. Coming face to face with being a woman in this world, finding love for the first time, becoming ourselves and learning how to deal with the heavy stuff. We’ve packed it all in and hope it makes you feel something.”
Going further to open the door into the world of The Deep Blue for listeners, the band offers a track-by-track breakdown of the carefully coordinated Sugarcoat journey.
How About It? – The one for before the night out
“Turning a blind eye doesn’t come naturally to The Deep Blue – “Shed my skin, leave it at the door” – this one attempts to describe how it feels when the mere thought of being in your body puts you in danger. It’s poetic and is bound to make you want to move. It's a bop, but at its core, this is a protest song. A soft f-u to the patriarchy.”
Lost Boy - One for waiting for a pizza at 2am.
“Do you know a boy who has never made peace with adulthood? This is an ode to the young child within us all. Steeped in nostalgia and reminiscent of Georgia’s childhood in Scotland, this is a dreamy adventure through the sound worlds of indie and folk. Singing this song makes our hearts ache a little bit as our minds are inevitably drawn to someone we love, who has lost their way, clinging on to their youth just a little too tightly.
Lakehouse - One for the late-night bus ride home.
“Lakehouse is a very special song to us and the most emotionally raw on the EP. It’s an ode to the paradox of fearing vulnerability whilst longing for connection. Sometimes the words are just too heavy to say out loud.”
Something Good - One for sleepy Sunday mornings.
“It’s hard to feel like everyone else has a good thing that, for you, is always just out of reach. To ‘fall in love’ feels like a rite of passage but some have to wait a while! This song is for the sweet moment of warmth and relief when you suddenly find yourself wrapped up in it”
Gradually discovering the powers that they could conjure as a collective, it was under lockdown conditions that The Deep Blue – Georgia, Niamh, Katie and Sophie - began to rehearse together and develop new song ideas. Their debut EP, Taking On Water, released in 2021 caused whispers to grow amongst new music seekers, triggering a complete lock-out at Liverpool’s Sound City Festival and their first SOLD-OUT show at Manchester’s Deaf Institute.
Moving through 2023, having spent the previous year releasing a string of singles including the breathtaking Yellow And Gold, the drive of The Deep Blue to continue their upward swing and deliver even more powerful songwriting becomes more apparent with every release and every live appearance.
