With body politics and the patriarchy squarely in their crosshairs, Manchester’s harmony-rich, ass-kicking The Deep Blue return to shake things up with their new flash bomb, Saturday night, pre-disco, sing-in-the-shower bop, How About It? Tearing back into listeners lives with an unequivocal single finger salute from the sisterhood to anyone willing to take them on, the track launches the four-piece’s Sugarcoat EP, released this summertime, whilst the band take to the road for five, newly announced live dates from next month.
Punk in spirit and somewhere between alt-folk and stadium pop in practice, The Deep Blue’s deep pile, three-piece vocal harmonies, courtesy of Georgia, Niamh and Katie, ice a cake that’s made of non-compromise and rebellious spirit. Beaten into shape by drummer, Sophie, to make the quartet complete, How About It? is distilled, worldly-wise and world-weary, acerbic commentary turned pop. Both deeply personal and instantly accessible, this energising banger is set free for anyone to take as their own and, in the wishes of the band: ask questions of the world as they dance around their kitchen.
Taking multiple themes of growing up in a wild world, the Sugarcoat EP is a conscious effort to document The Deep Blue’s occasionally painful navigation through adulthood whilst having each other to lean on. With distinct tracks covering pivotal moments, the band says that How About It? is the ‘one for before the big night out’, stating Flyte, Haim and The Staves as influences.
A band statement adds: “Turning a blind eye doesn’t come naturally to The Deep Blue. ‘How About It?’ attempts to describe how it feels when the mere thought of being in your body puts you in danger. It’s poetic and is bound to make you want to move. It's a bop but, at its core, this is a protest song. A soft f-u to the patriarchy.”
Following on from the band’s 2021’s raved-about single, Jealous Sea, their debut Taking On Water EP and a brace of singles last summer, including the high-energy, infectious summer anthem, Yellow And Gold, the Sugarcoat EP will be celebrated at a run of five, new live dates announced by the band as follows:
Mon 29 May – Liverpool, Jacaranda
Tue 30 May – Leeds, Hyde Park Book Club
Wed 31 May – London, The Shacklewell Arms
Fri 2 June – Cardiff, Porter's
Sat 3 June – Manchester, Deaf Institute
Tickets are on sale for all dates and further details and links can be found at www.seetickets.co.uk
Coming together under the confusing conditions of national lockdowns, The Deep Blue burst onto the scene in May 2021 with their very first recordings. As key indie media and radio quickly caught on to the immediately obvious possibilities presented by the marriage of friendship, creativity, poetry and pitch-perfect musicianship within the band, their debut appearance at Liverpool’s Sound City festival was a lock-out.
Counting an early career high in supporting Flyte on their 2022 UK Tour, the band returned home for their biggest show to date at a SOLD-OUT Deaf Institute, Manchester last summer prior to debut appearances at festivals including Green Man and All Points East.
