The Awning Release debut single ‘July’
Formerly known as Scoth, multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters Darragh Purcell and Evan Flaherty have emerged with a new musical venture: The Awning.
The cousins are set to release their debut single, "July" on July 26th. This poignant song, written in the aftermath of losing a dear friend, delves into the raw emotions of grief.
About the song the band say “This song was written in the aftermath of losing a dear friend who passed away far too soon. It explores the vulnerable emotions of grief and serves as a poignant reminder of life's fragility.
The lyrics narrate the events from his drowning to the funeral, with each day passing swiftly and insignificantly. Such moments make you question life and confront the reality that you cannot control the broader course of events. The carefree and joyful essence of summer is upended, forever altering what the month of July signifies for all of us. This song is for him.”
Their unique brand of ethereal folk combines traditional elements with lush production and other-worldly harmonies (akin to Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes) And their vast array of influences range from the stripped down folk of Nick Drake and early Sufjan Stevens, to the psychedelic sounds of The Beach Boys and Animal Collective. The duo are vastly experienced, coming off an impressive 2023 having played a plethora of high profile shows such as Whelans Ones to Watch, Indiependence Festival Cork as well as Masters of Tradition in Bantry alongside long time influence Sam Amidon under the Scoth moniker.
The County Clare cousins have big ambitions and are ending the year on a high note getting ready to play their first headline show as “The Awning” in The Workmans Cellar on the 10th of September and have been chosen as a showcasing act for Irish Music Week 2024.
