Preoccupied with the mental jumble that age brings, the years pancaking memory on top of memory and worrying a lot less about things imagined and forgotten, much-loved observational-pop songwriter, Sweet Baboo returns with latest single, Werewolf At Night, while packing his bags for an intimate, six-date September UK Tour. Releasing his first new music since the release of his seventh studio album, The Wreckage at the start of 2023, Baboo (aka Stephen Black) makes the closing months of the year amongst his busiest ever as he also strikes out on a mammoth, 32-date tour of the UK and Europe in support of the legendary Teenage Fanclub through October and November.
A one-man tour guide into the sprightliest, most whimsical corners of songcraft, the A-Sideâs casual comparisons to Serge Gainsbourgâs smoky chansons dâamour is joined by the peppy, sipping-tea-while-the-world-burns B-Side of Crumbling. Adding Beach Boysâ Party! pep to proceedings, with its waltzing ballroom organ counterpoint to the deep, lyrical foreboding, the coupling of light and shade, of furrowed-brows and glass-clinking bonhomie, offers listeners a typically rich encounter with the latest spoils from the idiosyncratic Sweet Baboo song factory.
Black says of the songs: ââWerewolf at Nightâ was called 'Memories', but that sounds too much like a West End show. Itâs a song about real memories, mis-remembered memories and made-up memories. Eventually they all get mixed up anyway. It reminded me of a Serge Gainsbourg or Lee Hazelwood song, so we evoked the sounds of their records, with a splash of eighties keyboards for good measure.
âI have always loved the âBeach Boysâ Party!â album and after a couple of glasses of wine we decided to record a song in the same spirit. âCrumblingâ was recorded that evening and itâs about how the world is going to sh*t and I sit there motionless, not doing anything to help. At least it's honest.â
Seldom found in a more natural setting than on stage, the Sweet Baboo life-affirming one-man shows surrounding the release of The Wreckage found Black on the road for two long months, playing committed shows from Glasgow to Falmouth. Undeterred by single beds in small hotels and the challenges of motorway service station dining, all of the confirmed stop-offs on the Sweet Baboo September UK Tour, as well as imminent festival dates, are as follows:
Tue 25 â Thu 27 Jul â Cottingham, Cottingham Folk Festival
Thu 3 â Sun 6 Aug â Bristol, Valley Festival
Thu 31 Aug â Sun 3 Sep â Dorset, End Of The Road
Tue 5 Sep â York, The Crescent
Wed 6 Sep â Edinburgh, Voodoo Rooms
Thu 7 Sep - Clitheroe, The Swan and Royal
Fri 8 Sep â Bristol, Strange Brew
Sat 9 Sep - Cambridge, Portland Arms
Sun 10 Sep - St Leonards On Sea, Marina Fountain

Enjoying his fifteenth year as a recording artist, Black remains embedded in a still-growing community of progressive Welsh musicians and creatives while working from his base in Cardiff. In addition to having performed in the live and studio bands of Gruff Rhys, Cate Le Bon and Gorkys Zycotic Mynci legend, Euros Childs, he welcomed Boy Azoogaâs Davey Newington (drums), H Hawkline (bass), Group Listening band mate, Paul Jones (synths) and BBC Radio 2 Folk Award-nominated singer-songwriter, Georgia Ruth (vocals, harp and recorder) onto the recordings of both Werewolf At Night and Crumbling.
With singles including Hopeless, Good Luck, The Worry and Horticulture, Sweet Babooâs latest, acclaimed album was released on his own Amazing Tapes From Canton label in January. Gifting the world songs of everyday romance, observational candour and frequent, dark comedy, the Sweet Baboo clock started with the release of his rare and sought-after, 2008 debut album, The Mighty Baboo and has continued through presumed lost, cult-classic albums, released on the Moshi Moshi label, including 2013âs Ships, 2015âs The Boombox Ballads and 2017âs Wild Imagination.
