Songs on Repeat - September 2022

Here's a round up of the songs old and new we've been enjoying at Click Roll Boom HQ this month. Looks like we've all been missing our youth a bit this month!

Novo Amor, Gia Margaret - No Fun (2019)

No Fun is a great mellow track to start off this month's five. With excellent vocals from talented Welsh artist Novo Amor, alongside Gia Margaret, and a beautiful guitar tone - this is a really atmospheric track that's definitely worth a listen.

PIPER - Gentle Shower (1983)

This is a classic Japanese Synthpop track that instantly evokes nostalgia from the intro. With a catchy vocal loop, snappy 808 drums and a funky guitar and bass melody - you can't help but love this 1983 classic.

Richie Havens - I Can't Make It Anymore (1967)

If you asked me to explain what "hauntingly beautiful" meant, I'd show you this song. Richie Havens's soulful voice combined with the sombre lyrics make for a truly powerful performance. When this performance is combined with an authentic and extremely skillful guitar performance, you have a classic tune definitely worth a listen.

Delicate Steve - Wally Wilder (2011)

Delicate Steve, the stage name of uber-talented musician Steve Marion, brings us this rad instrumental track at number 4. Words couldn't do justice to the absolutely killer guitar performance and tone in this track, especially when paired with the powerful percussion and superb production. So go check it out instead.

Post Animal - Ralphie (2018)

I apologise in advance, because this song's going to get stuck in your head - especially the chorus. This indie banger is brought to us by Chicago band Post Animal, on their debut album 'When I Think Of You In A Castle'. This song brings classic vibes with gorgeous and rocking guitar tones, catchy vocals and a memorable vocal performance. Make sure to give this one a listen.

Amy:

Jaxx - Victoria's Secret (2022)

The pressures and beauty standards put on young females in modern society makes me sick. You have to look this way or that way, to live up to expectations set by the media....it's disgraceful and degrading. This song is the ultimate fuck you to beauty standards. The acceptance that all bodies are different and you should just be happy being however you want to be.

The Boo Radleys - Ride the Tiger (1996)

Lyrically this song is incredible and gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. It also features one of my all time favourite guitar solos.

NOBRO - Better Each Day (2021)

Basically just for the lyric "being a bitch is not illegal, so...." so pretentious, so attitude laden and I love it!!

Symposium - Fairweather Friend (1997)

I can't even remember where I first heard of Symposium, I think I bought a random CD in a huge batch from a scuzzy market stall in Clacton back in the early 2000's. They're one of these bands who've just always been there. "Fairweather Friend" is super catchy, infectious, underrated Britpop. I love the little ska esque interludes throughout the song.

Lazyboy - Underwear Goes Inside the Pants (2004)

Baz Luhrmann - Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen) (1999)

I've lumped these two together as the reason is fundamentally the same. I've spent 18 and 23 years respectively hating both songs, never really giving either a chance when they came out. For some reason they popped into my head today and stopped me in my tracks. Both offer such powerful lyrical statements and the fact they're spoken word makes the message even stronger. The former takes a bleak look at the state of society and the latter offers advice on how to live your best life. They're incredible and I've been left wondering why I've been so against them for all these years.

Whale - Crying at Airports (1998)

This song is so unique and different. It crosses over into so many genres from electronica to indie to hip hop to trip hop. There's so much going on it's a captivating listen!

10cc - Dreadlock Holiday (1978)

I mean who doesn't love this song!

Scott

Gary Moore - Walking by Myself (1990)

Joe Walsh - Rocky Mountain Way (Live at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium) (1976)

The Rolling Stones - Jumpin' Jack Flash (1963)

Bad Company - Feel Like Makin' Love (Remastered) (1975)

Be Bop Deluxe - Maid In Heaven (Remastered) (1975)

BUT…. this doesn’t tell the full picture as I’ve spent a lot of time listening to soundtracks this month. Stranger Things, Peaky Blinders and Killing Eve so due to the multiple songs and seasons I may have only heard each song once or twice. Highly recommend the soundtracks and the shows.

Misfits - Helena (1999)

Coming up to October and Halloween, I slowly prepare by listening to quite a lot of Misfits. They are my go to band specifically for September not sure how the habit was initially made, but Helena is my most favourite.

Weezer - Undone (The Sweater Song) (1992)

This one has been stuck on my mind for awhile and I have to give it a listen. It is on almost on all of my Spotify generated playlists and I never cease to get bored of it.

The Dead Love - If You Say So (2021)

I fell in love with The Dead Love at a gig back in February and this one is their most popular and catchiest and instantly puts me in a good mood.

Ghost - Elizabeth (2010)

This one is the most underrated Ghost song and I love it. I am mostly a fan of Prequelle and Meliora but I like going back to their older stuff once in awhile.

Doja Cat (ft. SZA) - Kiss Me More

I found this one recently whilst scouting out of my comfort zone and it really is surprising for me to come to like this one, it really throws my selection off but is really addictive!

Stone Sour - Gone Sovereign (2012)

I am a bigger fan of Stone Sour than of Slipknot and this is one of the first songs I really fell in love with by Stone Sour and it never fails to settle me after a hard day,

Stone Sour - Say You’ll Haunt Me

This one always came after Gone Sovereign in my personal playlists and I loved it for its mysterious and mellow entrance before it really built to the chorus. It’s one of those songs I have memorised since my young teens, knowing every melody line, drum beat and lyric by heart.

Spiritbox - Holy Roller (2012)

I feel like Holy Roller might have been mentioned previously on our On-Repeat, but I have completely been obsessing over Spiritbox for a long time and this one never fails to pump me up, extra points when it is played at my local Metal Bar!

The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight (1995)

Tonight, Tonight is epic in scope, driven by Billy Corgan’s urgently romantic lyrics, Jimmy Chamberlin’s speed-freak drumroll, and a thirty-piece string section pulled from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Elton John – Tiny Dancer (1971)

Tastefully orchestrated and impeccably recorded, Tiny Dancer soars on the strength of its magisterial chorus – so much in fact, that even the song’s excellent verses come off as a mere prelude.

The La’s – There She Goes (1990)

There She Goes is a masterful display of songcraft. Its instantly-recognisable opening riff drew a direct connection between the folk rock of the sixties and the jangle pop of the eighties; while settling a foundational stone for the emergent Britpop movement.

Bring Me the Horizon – Throne (2015)

Throne comes on as a machine-tooled electro pop-rock hybrid determined to level the mainstream, invade arenas and carry its authors to modern rock’s top seat. With the benefit of hindsight, it managed all that pretty well.

Guns N’ Roses – Welcome to the Jungle (1987)

The song’s slippery groove, coupled with Slash’s ferocious guitar and Axl Rose’s menacing vocal, made it an instant classic and it remains a defining moment of rock.

Tyler

Hey there! I'm Tyler, 19 and outside of writing for CRB I'm an SEO & CMS Executive at a car leasing company. Lot of boring web development stuff basically!

If you've taken a peek at my 5 songs for the month at any point you can probably guess my taste in media is all over the place, but if there's anything that's my favourite it's probably Star Trek. My favourite genre overall is probably New Wave but I listen to pretty much anything that gets thrown my way.

On a weekend you'll probably find me watching F1 and hopefully covering some more gigs in the near future, I've done some journalism stuff outside of CRB but most of my writing is creative work or last minute page content for a new car model. I'm based in Wakefield primarily but Leeds is only a train away when they're not striking.
