Songs On Repeat: March 2024

TYLER:

Jacques Brel - Amsterdam (1964)

We’re starting March off with an iconic French classic by Jacques Brel. With just a piano and a truly powerful voice, Jacques conveys passionate emotion and a story that transcends language barriers. The slow escalation of the song and aggressive delivery has drawn many artists to this song, even Bowie, but I feel this version captures the spirit of the song best.

Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around And Fell In Love (1975)

Onto something a little mellower, this smooth rock jam from the 70’s was brought back into the cultural zeitgeist with Marvel’s iconic ‘Guardians of The Galaxy’- which turns ten years old this year. With catchy lyrics, a smooth yet groovy beat, and plenty of ear-pleasing vocal harmonies - it’s not hard to see why James Gunn brought this classic into his soundtrack. I’d recommend adding it to your Awesome Mix too, just for the killer solo alone.

Chet Baker - I Fall In Love Too Easily (1956)

Chet Baker is a painfully underrated artist, who deserves to be remembered at the same heights as Sinatra or Tony Bennett. His gentle tones are the perfect accompaniment to any jazz track, especially the classic ‘I Fall in Love Too Easily’. Another mellowed out track, the crackles and pops that underlay that classic jazz piano sound and forlorn trumpet transport you to a darker, smokier place in a tucked away corner of Chicago every listen. Check it out.

Bobbie Gentry - Ode To Billie Joe (1967)

The title track of one of Bobbie Gentry’s better remembered albums, this funky acoustic track is one of my favourites at the minute. With a deep, resounding voice and a catchy guitar that dances around the bass, you could easily turn this track into a killer dance song in any era. What stands now is a folk-ish classic with a mystery at its core - who is Billie Joe, and why did he end his life? See if you can figure it out after enough listens.

Madeleine Peyroux - To Love You All Over Again (2009)

Rounding out our list is another chill track, from an amazing artist with far too many vowels in their name. To Love You All Over Again is a classic ballad, with a gentle rhythm and soulful vocals. This is a track that was made for a soulful last dance with a red-dressed lover. Whether Valentine’s paid off for you or not last month, I’m confident you’ll find something to love in this song.

SCOTT:

Kaiser Chiefs - Kaiser Chiefs’ Easy Eight Album (2024)

I’ve been really enjoying this album after shooting its launch event in Leeds a few weeks ago. Check out our coverage here: https://www.clickrollboom.co.uk/news/live-review-amp-gallery-kaiser-chiefs-project-house-leeds

KEMPSEY:

Kings Of Leon - Mustang (2024)
For both purposes of dissecting for review and just casual listening, this song has been my no.1 most repeated song since it’s released. It’s quite catchy and an easy listen. I can’t wait to find out what they have next.

Mother Mother - Grief Chapter (Album) (2024)

Goodness, this whole album has been on repeat. It’s quite a passionate masterpiece and hits even harder live, and I consider it a very intimate gig to attend. Favourable mentions are Explode!, Forever and The Matrix.

AURORA - The Seed (2019)

There’s something about Aurora that is Godly and Earthly. There is a contrast of gentle and powerful and passionate forces lie within her music. Her range of vocal and height of music always amazes me and this song no matter the first time or the 500th always gives me chills.

Crawlers - Come Over (Again) (2021)
Heard this song when Crawlers supported Mother Mother at Leeds O2 Arena, and boy this really hit harder live, just the pure emotion spilled out from the stage and into the crowd absolutely wonderful to witness.

JOHN:

Pierce the Veil - King For a Day (2012)

This song has always been on my rock playlist, but in recent weeks has been moved up higher, for those days when something upbeat and loud is needed.

Green Day - Jesus of Suburbia (2004)

Having been a fan of Green Day, since the release of Dookie, I have quite a few of their tracks on my playlist.  But ever since hearing the live version of this song, from their Bullet in a Bible album, it has remained a firm favourite of mine.

My Chemical Romance - This is How I Disappear (2006)

The Black Parade is one of my favourite albums by MCR, to the point where I have both the studio version and the live version.  When this album came out, I was disappointed to find that this song was never released as a single. So I thought I would give it some needed credit.

The Killers - Mr Brightside (2004)

This song takes me back to 2006, during my first trip to Australia, where I stayed at a backpackers in Bondi.  Groups of strangers becoming friends and singing along to this song, while drinking Tooheys New.

Foo Fighters - This is a Call (1995)

This song takes me back to my days of going to my favourite venue The Island in Ilford on a Friday night.  Many hangovers and many greasy kebabs later, this track remains one of my favourites from this iconic band.

Green Day - Basket Case (1994)

Having previously mentioned Green Day, it is difficult to believe that this great song is approaching its 30th anniversary.  What’s more it is great to sing along to, no matter where you are, unless of course you are on a bus full of pensioners!

TOM

Josie Oliver  - Train to Soho (2023)

I’ve had this song on rotation for a few months now and the storytelling along with the driving, guitar and drum beat make it a great song to stick on and just enjoy!

Henry Moodie - orbit (2023)

This power ballad just oozes with emotion, most definitely one to crank up to 11 singing your heart out too !

Declan McKenna - Nothing Works (2024)

From his new album “What happened to the beach” what more can I say except it’s Declan McKenna! My personal prince of indie pop.

Omar Apollo - Ice Slipping (2023)

Beautiful piano melody, punchy drums, and soulful voice…. Omar emotion from personal experience is felt throughout, I fortunately can’t stop listening to it.

Twenty One Pilots - Overcompensate (2024)

The lead single from the upcoming 6th studio album the duo return to that non genre conforming sound we all love. Following on from the story of the previous 3 albums, Overcompensate makes you feel like the duo are fully aware that their fictional world along with the storyline they’ve created is just as important as the music they produce.

AMY

The Barstool Preachers - Lighthouse Keeper (2023)

I’ve been loving a piano ballad amidst another wise uptempo album. Its a really nice way to break up the record and allow the vocalist their moment to shine. ‘Lighthouse Keeper’ is a wonderfully picturesque sound that pours with emotion.

The Icicle Works - Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream) (1984)

I’ve been obsessed with this tack since seeing the band support Big Country. Catchy as heck; it’s a great 80’s sound and a fantastic sing along!

The Wonder Years - The Year of the Vulture (2024)

It’s new The Wonder Years….does it really need any reasoning or introduction. The band challenged themselves to try something different and write this year's NXT theme the result a faultless slice of high energy, high passion alt rock.

Big Country - Winter Sky (1984)

This one too has found its way onto my heavy rotation following their live shows. It’s just a really beautiful, delicate song. With its lighter sound it worked well live mixed in with their grander tunes.

Bonny Light Horseman - California (2022)

I just love songs about California! This track has a wonderfully rolling feel, sun soaked but introspective at the same time.

Popes of Chillitown - Take a Picture (2023)

Popes of Chillitown are one of my favourite new discoveries. ‘Take a Picture’ is a fantastic high energy Ska Punk that is sure to ignite a room when played live!

Tyler

Hey there! I'm Tyler, 19 and outside of writing for CRB I'm an SEO & CMS Executive at a car leasing company. Lot of boring web development stuff basically!

If you've taken a peek at my 5 songs for the month at any point you can probably guess my taste in media is all over the place, but if there's anything that's my favourite it's probably Star Trek. My favourite genre overall is probably New Wave but I listen to pretty much anything that gets thrown my way.

On a weekend you'll probably find me watching F1 and hopefully covering some more gigs in the near future, I've done some journalism stuff outside of CRB but most of my writing is creative work or last minute page content for a new car model. I'm based in Wakefield primarily but Leeds is only a train away when they're not striking.
