Songs on Repeat: December 2024 - Wrapped Edition
Another year, another Spotify Wrapped! Here are the tune the Click Roll Boom team haven’t been able to get enough of it 2024!
Tyler:
Shelly - Steeeam (2020)
I cannot stress enough how much I've listened to Shelly this year. Clairo’s short-lived band featuring her cousin Claud dominated my listening time this year. With only two songs under their belt, ‘Shelly’ paints a musical picture that evokes the best of Cocteau Twins with a singer-songwriter flair. I could ramble about this song for a while, but I've definitely done so before. Just go listen to it!!
Steely Dan - Only A Fool Would Say That (1972)
If you asked me any other time of year, I wouldn't particularly call myself a big Steely Dan fan, but as soon as Wrapped comes around they've somehow wormed their way to the top of my listening hours. There's no other band like them, and their songs are intricately layered in a way that begs for repeat listening. This year it was this classic track, next year it'll probably be from Aja. The great cycle continues.
The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset (1967)
I believe this is another one that already featured on one of my top 5s this year, and for good reason. This ballad never gets old to me. From the unforgettable riff to the simple yet melancholically beautiful lyrics of Ray Davies, this is the ballad barrier all others must meet in my eyes (ears?).
Harry Nilsson - Everybody's Talkin’ at Me (1968)
Another mainstay of my musical listening habits; I'm pretty sure this one has been on every Wrapped since 2019. Midnight Cowboy is an incredible film, and this is the perfect title song in my opinion. Wistful but hopeful in a way only Nilsson’s unique talents could bring forward, if he’d called it “Everybody's Walkin’ Here” I'm sure it'd be more iconic than the Jaws theme today.
Lil Yachty - drive ME crazy! (2023)
“Let’s start here.” is the best album of the decade so far. I'd go so far as to argue it's the best psychedelic album in decades. Lil Yachty is a rapper that confidently steps into any musical role, and his work here completely flipped the script of what I knew about him and made me pay attention. This whole album is a shining example of artistic collaboration and experimentation from a mainstream artist who could very easily rest on his laurels and is well worth your time.
