Cardiff/London emo rock trio Sleep Outside have released their anxiety-riddled new single ‘Spider’. As vocalist and guitarist Adam Holborn says: “This track is probably the most frightening look into my everyday mental state that I could possibly write. I’ve had nightmares pretty frequently for as long as I can remember but last summer I dyed my hair red for the first time, a weirdly big deal for someone so self conscious, and that night I had the most terrifying nightmare about a big ass spider who was the same colour as my hair. I woke up and wrote that song pretty quickly the next day. The lyrics are pretty chaotic and felt like the realest representation of my day-to-day anxieties around everything I do.”
The animated accompanying music video for ‘Spider’, created by Theo Polyzoides, tells the story of the song in vivid and fear-conjuring detail, in a style that morphs through line drawings, real life and even an old-school video game aesthetic.
The track will feature on the band’s second EP ‘Lakes In Which To Drown In’, which will be released on 1st November via Best Life Records. The first track to be revealed - ‘Sick’ - really showcased Sleep Outside’s knack for melody, intricate riffing and pulling at the heart strings (with harp strings too!) Through the further tracks of the EP, Sleep Outside explore the notion of “selling out” (‘Math-Rock Millionaire’), struggling with your identity (‘Lakes In Which To Drown In’ and loss (‘AWEN’, which is the Welsh word for ‘muse’). It’s a personal journey but one which is strewn with lyrical content that’s impossible not to identify with.
Sleep Outside’s debut EP ‘This Won’t Ever Last’ saw them gain plaudits from the likes of Rock Sound who hailed their music “beautiful emo rock” and Gigwise who praised their “all racing-heart-guitar and cymbals, pop-punk-vibe vocals and emo lyrical matter.” This is a band that will easily capture the imaginations and hearts of fans of emo staples like Mineral, Braid, The Get Up Kids, and Jimmy Eat World.
Get ready to get emotional with Sleep Outside on the road this winter as they’ve announced 12 dates across the UK in November/December. Details below.
