Headline tour of the UK in November / December
“a band who have a very bright future indeed.” - Distorted Sound (8/10)
“Sleep Outside pay unmitigated attention to the details they thread through, in softer instrumental choices across harps and shimmering keys and percussion options to enrich what already sounds fantastic.” - The Soundboard
“matching the intensity of a racing mind whilst still retaining their anthemic nature and snaring pop-oriented hooks” - Noizze UK
Cardiff/London emo rock trio Sleep Outside have today released their new EP ‘Lakes In Which To Drown In’ via Best Life Records with a music video for the title track also revealed. ‘Lakes In Which To Drown In’ washes over you in emotionally-driven waves and builds with a harp-fuelled crescendo to its epic climax, whilst delving into some seriously weighty subject matter. Vocalist and guitarist Adam Holborn says: “As soon as we wrote this we knew it had to close out the EP, covering pretty much every influence we touch on throughout the rest of the record with a bang. Lyrically, this song was a tough one for me as it touches on some things that I’ve never talked about before and I was terrified for anybody to really figure it out for a long time. The song is about struggling with your identity and figuring out where exactly you fit within the world and the closer personal relationships you have on a daily basis. It’s about a life-time of body dysmorphia and how this can set off a domino effect for all other anxieties to follow. It’s probably the most honest I have ever been with anyone about how I feel and I really hope that anyone can find some peace with themselves because of it.”
‘Lakes In Which To Drown In’ follows the anxiety-riddled single ‘Spider’, which arrived with a beautifully animated music video, created by Theo Polyzoides and telling the story of the song in vivid and fear-conjuring detail. Elsewhere on the EP, Sleep Outside further showcase their knack for melody, intricate riffing and pulling at the heart strings (with harp strings too!) As well as themes of anxiety and identity struggles, they explore the notion of “selling out” (‘Math-Rock Millionaire’) and loss (‘AWEN’, which is the Welsh word for ‘muse’ and is about Adam’s Grandad who passed away when he was a teenager). It’s a personal journey but one which is strewn with lyrical content that’s impossible not to identify with.
Sleep Outside’s debut EP ‘This Won’t Ever Last’ saw them gain plaudits from the likes of Rock Sound who hailed their music “beautiful emo rock” and Gigwise who praised their “all racing-heart-guitar and cymbals, pop-punk-vibe vocals and emo lyrical matter.” This is a band that will easily capture the imaginations and hearts of fans of emo staples like Mineral, Braid, The Get Up Kids, and Jimmy Eat World.
