SINGLE REVIEW: Weekly Round-Up 22/01/24 - 28/01/24

The Marra - Masterpiece

'Masterpiece' stands out with its stunning combination of rugged, noticeably emotional vocals and sweeping Oasis-esque guitars. The track boasts a classic, hook-heavy sound that effortlessly aligns with the Britpop movement. As someone who grew up in the 90s, it has left me feeling incredibly nostalgic, capturing the essence of that era's music without resorting to generic expressions.

Flyss - Restless

'Restless' is truly exceptional, blending beautifully uplifting melodies and mournfully solemn lyrics within its hooky summery sound. The vocals are captivating, and the track exudes a wonderful dreamy and jangly atmosphere. Its hazy feel, catchy rhythm, and cathartic vibes reminded me of fellow New Zealanders The Beths, who I adore, incorporating elements of Bubblegrunge and power pop. Overall, it's an absolute joy to listen to, providing a rich and engaging listen.

Coming Up Roses - Don’t Let It Break Your Heart

'Don’t Let It Break Your Heart' boasts the most wonderful vocals, radiating a beautifully serene quality. The musical backdrop creates an immersive and dreamy ambient soundscape, making it a truly captivating experience. I found myself totally engulfed in the track, captivated by its sheer beauty.

Springworks - Faraday Eyes

'Faraday Eyes' represents a dynamic shift from Springworks' usual jangly indie vibe. The intense start, juxtaposed with the more electronica sound, creates a very intriguing mix. The track utilises a dark-wave, ethereal soundscape, showcasing a departure from their typical style. While my heart may lean towards the band's more accessible sound in previous singles, 'Faraday Eyes' is undeniably curious, ambient, and captivating. It kept me guessing throughout, highlighting the band's musical prowess and their fearlessness to deviate from the expected.

The Under_Score - Rocking Chair

'Rocking Chair' is epic in its classic, no-frills sound. The track is gritty, featuring bold vocals and an exhilarating, addictive sound that seamlessly blends elements of blues rock with the melodic rhythms of metal groove and the distorted grind of grunge. It's a churning, guitar-driven blast of arena-ready rock that captures the essence of raw energy and musical fusion.

Gavin Marengi - Back to Boston

I enjoyed the classic powerhouse, Americana-influenced rock sound with hints of blues and soulful melodiousness in 'Back to Boston'. The epic riffs, laden with infectious hooks, and the vocals, laced with confidence and attitude, create a captivating atmosphere. The maturity of the sound is impressive, making it hard to believe that Gavin is only 16! The execution feels like that of a seasoned professional with over 20 years of industry experience.

ESD - I’m No Beggar

'I'm No Beggar' is great! It exudes a fantastic sinister energy and shock rock feel. ESD's vocals carry an air of arrogance and attitude that adds a distinct character to the track. The imperfections in his voice are enjoyable, bringing the song to life and enhancing its impact. The spoken element adds a dynamic layer, and the powerful solo is truly electrifying!

Spooky Bambina - Psych Ward Beauty Kween

‘Psych Ward Beauty Kween’ exudes raw authenticity with brilliant, perfectly imperfect harmonies that make it a belting DIY anthem. The impact of the song lies in its simplistic bedroom rock instrumentation, showcasing a refreshing and genuine musicality.
