SINGLE REVIEW: Weekly Round-Up 01/01/24 - 07/01/24

Steve Johnson - Who Are You

"Who Are You" captivates with its scuzzy, dirty groove, embodying a gritty classic rock sound that carries an enticing layer of mystery. The sauntering vocals add an excellent touch, guiding the listener through the track's exploration of power dynamics. The guitar solos, sublime and masterfully executed, contribute to the overall allure of this thought-provoking piece. An absolute gem for those who appreciate a blend of raw energy and musical finesse.

Pattern Primitive - The Storm

Diverging slightly from the preceding single 'All In All,' 'The Storm' maintains the band's distinctive fragmented sound, cloaked in mystery. However, this time, the hypnotic elements adopt a more trippy quality, akin to a kaleidoscope of lucid colours streaming through a shattered stained glass window. The hazy, hedonistic soundscape is crafted with soft synths that impart an almost mathematical vibe, harmonising with dreamy, introverted vocals that gracefully dance atop the musical backdrop like a majestic firefly on water.

Grunner - My Own Enemy

'My Own Enemy' showcases a captivating fusion of chiming guitars, seamlessly blending the up-tempo indie jangle of the '90s with a grunge haze, shoegaze swirl, and sonic metal tendencies. The haunting instrumentation complements the melancholy, self-deprecating lyrics, evoking a sense of self-doubt and being trapped within the mind's confines. The vocals are remarkable, exuding raw and rugged authenticity, adding depth and sincerity to the poignant lyrics.

Paul Allen - Moonlight

Magnificently capturing the essence of the '90s and early 2000s indie scene, 'Moonlight' exudes just the right amount of swagger and a self-assured touch of pretentiousness. Paul effortlessly channels nasally, Liam Gallagher-esque vocals, perfectly paired with a Cast-inspired '60s jangle and subtle pop undertones reminiscent of Toploader. The track is irresistibly hooky and catchy, providing a fabulous nostalgic trip for those, like me, who came of age during the '90s Britpop era.
