SINGLE REVIEW: TUBE AMP'D - Something in the Way (Live) & Sorrow (Live)
TUBE AMP'D are back with their latest live covers, taking on Nirvana’s 'Something in the Way' and Bad Religion’s 'Sorrow'. While covers aren’t usually my go-to, I see their appeal, especially for newer bands looking to energise their sets. TUBE AMP'D, however, consistently bring a dynamic edge to their renditions.
Their version of Nirvana’s 'Something in the Way' infuses a fresh punk energy into the grunge classic, almost making it sound like a new track. They stay true to the original's scuzzy essence while injecting their own level of exhilaration. The grinding bass and thunderous drums create a powerful backdrop, and the vocals, while retaining Cobain’s fuzzed-out quality, add an extra layer of rowdy grit.
In contrast, their take on Bad Religion’s 'Sorrow' sticks closer to the band's punk roots. It pays fitting tribute to Greg Graffin’s original with perfectly melodic vocals but also incorporates TUBE AMP'D's DIY punk ethos. The result is a frantic, energetic homage that still manages to showcase their own personality. The resilient, pulsating drum beat and a quirky, homemade-sounding guitar solo inject a unique touch into the track.
While these covers are well-executed, I'd love to hear more original work from TUBE AMP'D. They have a knack for punk showmanship, and their own lyrics and original takes on the genre could be really exciting. Perhaps a punk version of something unexpected, like The Beatles' 'Yesterday', might be a fun experiment!
