SINGLE REVIEW: The Solarnites - Tell That To The Setting Sun

Having followed The Solarnites from my Norwich days, it's exciting to see their latest incarnation hit the scene with a renewed vigour. Originally starting as a two-piece, Danny and Gilles shared vocal duties and swapped guitars, delivering a slightly raw, yet endearing performance. Their personable demeanours made their shows heartwarming, if a bit rough around the edges. As the band grew, adding Mark on lead guitar and a drummer, they shifted to a fuller sound. Despite some lineup changes and Gilles eventually parting ways due to differing musical directions, the band’s spirit remained intact, with Danny confirming there was no bad blood.

After a brief hiatus to solidify their lineup, The Solarnites have emerged with a refreshed setup: Danny on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Mark on lead guitar, Ben on drums, and Jesus on bass. Their latest single, ‘Tell That To The Setting Sun,’ marks their first official release and serves as a bold statement of their place in the indie rock scene.

‘Tell That To The Setting Sun’ is an energetic, summer-ready anthem that pays homage to the indie rock bands of the early 90s. Its shimmering melodies, buzzing guitars, and infectious rhythm create a vibrant soundscape reminiscent of bands like the Gin Blossoms. The song blends indie rock with a hint of grunge, creating a dynamic and uplifting track that resonates with the grandiosity of its influences.

The song’s lyrical theme revolves around the universal fear of running out of time—whether it’s time for love, adventure, or personal success. This theme is conveyed through delightful vocal harmonies and a hazy, evocative atmosphere. While the band positions their sound within the UK indie scene, there's a notable American indie influence in their style, drawing comparisons to bands like Gigolo Aunts and Goo Goo Dolls.

The track’s anthemic nature and elaborate guitar solo highlight the band’s ambition and creativity. ‘Tell That To The Setting Sun’ transcends a simple indie tune, weaving a grand soundscape alongside elements of jangle pop that elevates it above the ordinary. The Solarnites’ hunger for success and their dedication to their craft is evident in this release, making it a fitting homage to their musical influences and a testament to their evolving sound.
