SINGLE REVIEW: The Rogues - Lizzy
South Wales' The Rogues' debut single 'Lizzy' examines how people outwardly present themselves versus how they feel inside. How easy it is to act a certain way to fill voids in life.
Bouncing drums back vibrant, melodic, chiming indie guitars. There are shimmering hooks and DIY riffs. The vocals are smooth and soulful but perfectly encapsulate the bláze swagger of bands like The Libertines or Razorlight while also delivering the sparkle of 80's indie giving a nod to the likes of The Flatmates or McCarthy.
The lyrics contrast the upbeat jangle of 'Lizzy' as they play out the story of a girl lost in the world. Living a crazy lifestyle of meaningless hookups for fear of rejection. Disguising her loneliness, vulnerability, and desire for something more behind her drunken, party-girl image. Putting her faith in music such as drum and bass, sounds that mirror her chaotic life. 'Lizzy' pits how people act against how they feel, the idea that despite someone portraying themselves as wild and carefree inside they're lost and empty.
The Rogues have a perfect formula of hard-hitting lyrics wrapped in stunning, upbeat nostalgia. You would never guess this is the band's debut single. The songwriting is exceptional, the production faultless and the overall sound as polished as bands who have been in the industry for 20 years. A slice of rhythmic indie heaven!
