SINGLE REVIEW: The Parallax Method- We’ve Learned Nothing
Out Now via Independent Release.
The Parallax Method are Three Friends: Danny Beardsley (guitars), Dave wright (drums) and Ben Edis (bass), Who got together in 2014 to jam the type of music they loved, without any plan of taking it out of the rehearsal room. With varied influences between them, but with a shared love of prog rock acts such as Periphery, Tesseract and Karnivool. The Parallax Method combines old classic rock undertones, framed with innovative songwriting and structures and melodic string arrangements.
“We’ve Learned Nothing” is the leading single to The Parallax method’s debut Album, Folie à Trois. This track is not shy of weaving in and out of genres starting with a light shuffle of jazz like arrangements. I took the liberty of listening to the whole album, my goodness, the level of genius and detail is beyond my level to dissect. This track is much more jarring than the rest, a great opener indeed.
Warm warbling bass pans in each ear, prepare for goosebumps as the asmr effect takes place massaging your brain in beautiful waterfall trickles. The Guitars are bright, not quite jangly but packs some bite and drums punches and crashes its way through, swerving through time signatures.
It feels like a conversation, constant confusion and light bulb moments and progresses to intense mystery and then leaps into action. The overall tonality is very consistent on the album, creating a unique staple identity.
At an impressive 5 minutes and 36 seconds of instrumental madness, there’s no dull moment, just pure flow and technical talent. (moreso impressive seeing the other tracks hitting the 6 minute mark and beyond!)
I’m not the most clued up on prog, I know it is the hardest genre to write to as a musician and as a listener it takes patience, but I do admire a few select pieces and this one has joined the list. I do believe the weird and wonderful of this track also draws some resemblance to Primus, in my eyes that's a compliment.
