SINGLE REVIEW: Sunset Blush - Keep Me in Your Pocket
I'll admit I wasn't sure what to make of the latest single from Australia's Sunset Blush 'Keep Me In Your Pocket' on the first listen. He has a very unique voice and isn't the greatest singer but after many listens I realised it’s the raw slightly off-key Shane MacGowan comparable warblings that make the track special. If the vocals were pitch-perfect the song would lose all its integrity and charm.
Backed with simple electric guitar accompaniment the words pour with heartfelt honesty before the introduction of plodding, pensive drums at the midpoint that serves as a gateway to a fuller sound all whilst the vocals don't waiver from their somewhat DIY stance.
'Keep Me in Your Pocket' beams with catchy, thoughtful riffs and an endearing tone. Mixing tempos the track ranges from trudging lows, ballad-like to mids and a nice swing-ish vibe laced with Latin-esque guitars.
The lyrics give a sense of positivity, the idea of being there for someone in their darkest times. "Keep me in your pocket when you feel down" shares the notion that however crazy life gets someone's there to help lift you back up. That one person who always knows how to make you feel right and comforted. The words are delivered with haunting, humbling, raw beauty.
Sunset Blush is a unique talent, his sound nestled somewhere between contemporary folk and alt-rock but not entirely fitting anywhere. His words delivered with total authenticity. While maybe not for everyone 'Keep Me in Your Pocket' is a grower, the kind of song you need to immerse yourself in to fully understand. I'm a big fan of the simplicity as it allows the lyrics to have an even greater impact.
I highly recommend taking a chance on 'Keep Me in Your Pocket'; it's an intriguing, rousing listen.
