SINGLE REVIEW: Popscene - Toil And Trouble
Thessaloniki,Greece based band, Popscene are pushing the limits of today’s Alt-rock infusing grunge, nu-jazz and authentic rock and roll. Showcasing their combined backgrounds and 4 years of stage experience and sterling admiration for the 70’s on their first born album “Limousine Eyelash” in December 2021 and now returning with quirky, old school and energetic authentic sound once again with “Toil And Trouble”.
Toil And Trouble is vintage funk doubled with mystifying modern alt-rock riffs with a hint of witchcraft. Very catchy, simple yet vindictive lyrically. Those vocals show off classic rock ranges. Opening with distortion and bubbles, shuffling drum beats and warm bass grooves.
There’s remnants of old timey jazz club vibes with intricate piano fills and by the last chorus the piano makes grand gestures and dances in the background contrasting with the harshness of the guitars.
The lyrics reflect that of standing up for oneself, portraying disappointment to those who had the potential to be a close ally. It’s a tune of not backing down or owing anything to others that seek out harm. “ You don’t owe me. You don’t own me. You don’t know me” the similarities in words make it so easy to get stuck in your head.
As simple as the structure of lyrics are, it is made up by the intricacies of layers of music and technical skills.
“Toil And Trouble” is a beautiful infusion of many things, appeasing the old school and the new.
