SINGLE REVIEW: Oliver Nolan - These Were the Days

Oliver Nolan’s 'Those Were the Days' captures a thoughtful nostalgia while tackling the clash between old and new ways. Inspired by those moments when life changes, and people look back with differing views on whether things have improved or lost their charm, the track speaks to the feeling of longing for simpler times, questioning if progress is always for the better. Oliver’s trademark brashness is on display here, but there's a touch of introspection woven in that gives the song a sense of reflection.

Opening with a dreamy, lullaby-like intro, 'Those Were the Days' lulls listeners into a tranquil soundscape before the drums kick in, introducing a rhythm that’s as rousing as it is melodic. True to form, Oliver’s raw, slightly off-key vocals take centre stage, and as always, their laddish charm adds an authenticity that's unmistakably his. The track’s structure is expertly crafted, balancing mellow verses with a ramped-up, gang-vocal chorus that gives the song a sense of camaraderie and shared nostalgia.

Blending dream-pop sensibilities with a punk-like edge, the track also incorporates subtle piano interludes and a sweeping guitar solo in the outro, adding layers that make it feel almost cinematic. Watching Oliver’s journey unfold, it’s clear he’s honed his sound while staying true to his perfectly imperfect roots. ‘Those Were the Days’ is undoubtedly his most accomplished piece yet, a track that showcases his knack for blending genres and delivering a tune that’s as thoughtful as it is catchy.
