SINGLE REVIEW: KAVES - Silliè Billet
Norwich mainstay KAVES are back with their kick ass new single 'Silliè Billet'.
Long time live favourite the title started out as a joke to be changed later but stuck. Now finally having a proper insight into the songs themes that burst with the idea of being dumb in love the title couldn't be more fitting.
The thing that elevates KAVES above rest is they don't rest on their laurels, they don't shy away from crossing boundaries and mixing genres. Varying in age and musical likes each member brings a different perspective and influence with the end result being a soundscape of genres ranging from modern metalcore to classic riff hard rock.
'Silliè Billet' starts out with a plodding swing-ish vibe, mounting to bursting anthemic alt rock with Caitlin's modern, powerful, soaring vocals exploding with passion. It moves to a pensive acoustic moment before allowing Norwich's own guitar hero Tim a chance for some proggy self indulgence. Mia's bassline is as dirty as ever and Mike's drums are raucous and infectious.
The lyrics take a look at all the times you've let someone have a grip on you they didn't deserve. Mindlessly allowing them to treat you how they like, too dumbfounded by the power you afford them to break away.
KAVES are the real deal. Big, infectious, dynamic sound with catchy hooks, showstopping riffs and vocals that balance the purity in Caitlin's voice with the raw anger at situations that have left her vexed. Their songwriting is honest and wise whilst their delivery is always faultless.
Everything about KAVES just makes sense, easily one of the best new bands around.
