SINGLE REVIEW: i - enemy
Originally formed in the early 90's LA-based rock outfit i disbanded for a number of years before reforming in 2016.
Their latest single 'enemy' is a mental health-inspired banger.
Theatrical vocals, with passionate heartfelt stance backed with DIY garage rock vibes. Their sound is somewhere between Pulp's artistic flamboyance and Soundgarden's grit. They're captivating and melodic bursting with catchy, glistening riffs and crashing drums. Beaming with retro vibes you can tell the band's roots lie in the 90s and they work hard to retain their authentic sound.
For me, while musically 'enemy' is a likeable, infectious listen with anthemic qualities it's the lyrics where it shines brighter than its peers.
It takes a dark dive into how so often it's our own mind that is our biggest enemy. The idea that sometimes it's impossible to escape the confinement of thoughts. Like being stuck in the smallest prison of all with every past mistake or perceived failure haunting you. Never feeling satisfied and yearning to escape; "I don't want to be inside my mind". It's a powerful listen, perfectly recounting the difficulties of mental health and how hard it is to break free from inner demons.
'enemy' is a sparkling slice of unfaltering indie rock with stunning articulate vocals that retain a raw sincerity. The songwriting is exceptional, a hard-hitting, relatable lyric. I struggle to understand why i have less than 30 monthly Spotify listens, 'enemy' is absolutely blinding!
